| You will fail without this book by Be the Change You Wish to See (Boston, MA) 5 Stars August 24, 2009 I just kicked butt on the Part I boards! I got nearly 100% on the Neurology portion of the exam, exclusively based on this book. 50% of people fail the boards the first time because of the neurology on the test. If you read this book and answer the questions, you will definitely pass. There are some reviews here that have various complaints about this book. I don't really know if this book will transform you into a top notch neurologist. All I know is that if you master the material in this book you will be very well prepared for the neurology portion of the boards. Not only this, but, I found the book to be quite a friendly and enjoyable read. I thought it was helpful to also purchase a Neurology atlas to have better pictures than what is provided in the book. I personally got Netter's Neurology, which I found to be plus/minus. I don't know if I would recommend Netter's Neurology but after shelling out all that dough, I didn't pursue another atlas, so I don't have anything better to recommend.
| | neurology review by Todd Carranza (rhode island) 5 Stars April 18, 2009 This is the ultimate text. You can take the board course every year in New York which is also excellent. Kaufmann makes the material transparent. The questions at the end of each chapter grill the material into your head. Really excellent.
| | Required reading for psychiatry boards by Steven Bagley (Los Angeles, CA) 5 Stars March 26, 2009 This book occupies a single niche, and it fits there perfectly. Psychiatrists receive some residency training in neurology and 40% of the written psychiatry board exam covers clinical neurology -- not just behavioral neurology or neuropsychiatry, but mainstream neurology. How to learn that neurology? Read this book, very carefully.
Pluses: (a) very clear text, (b) wonderful drawings of neurological presentations that are BETTER than photos and almost as good as videos, (c) about a zillion self-text questions at the end of each chapter (and more at the end of the book).
Minuses: this is not an authoritative, comprehensive neurology text -- you'll have to read Goetz or Adams and Victor for that -- but it doesn't promise to be, or need to be, such, so this isn't really much of a negative.
| | Good Start by Jack R Dale 3 Stars May 29, 2008 Although it is written in a rather patronising tone, this little book is nevertheless a good overview of neurological issues that are faced in psychiatry. By no means an exhaustive textbook in neurology, it presents a reasonable starting point for many topics. Some of the ilustrations are very good, however others (such as the fMRI's and PET's) would have been better presented in colour. Some topics are out of date (eg the chapter on epilepsy) but gives a good overview.
| | A must have for every psychiatrist! by M. Cantu 5 Stars March 03, 2008 A solid foundation in neurology is important for every psychiatrist. This book serves as an excellent resource to gain this foundation.
