EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description The fallout from a horrific Washington explosion has just begun -- and so has CIA superagent Mitch Rapp's hunt for a killer with a personal agenda. In the final weeks of a fierce presidential campaign, a motorcade carrying candidate Josh Alexander is shattered by a car bomb. Soon after the attack, Alexander is carried to victory by a sympathy vote, but his assailants have not been found. When CIA director Irene Kennedy and Special Agent Skip McMahon receive damaging intelligence on Washington's most powerful players, they call on Mitch Rapp -- the one man reckless enough to unravel a global network of contractkillers on an explosive mission that leads back to the heart of our nation's capital...and the inner sanctum of the Oval Office. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 155 reviews)
| Could have been written in far fewer pages by Alexander (Massachusetts) 3 Stars November 07, 2009 The first 100 pages were great but the next 300 dragged. The final 10 pages were o.k. Flynn suffers from a problem that most of today's crime novelists suffer from. They get a contract from their publisher that calls for 400+ pages but the story they come up with only warrants 100. They then fill the pages with fluff that has nothing to do with the plot or the story. Really, do we need to know that one of the characters was wearing an expensive navy suit, highly polished black shoes, a blue button down shirt and a navy and silver striped tie? You could argue that it had something to do with character development but to me it added nothing to the story. Such descriptions filled the book and only served to take up pages.
This was my first Flynn book and it will be my last. I hope this isn't his best but I don't want to find out.
| | The ending was ludicrous by LASoundCrafter (Sherman Oaks) 2 Stars November 03, 2009 Act of Treason is Mitch Rapp's eighth outing - and frankly a mystery why it was released the way it was. I am a great fan of Vince Flynn's writing, at least up to this book, now I'm not so sure. OK, we can't hit them all out of the park, but Act of Treason just seems "wrong" on so many levels. If you have never read Vince Flynn before, pass on this one.
During a contentious presidential election a terrorist group in the Middle East threatens violence. A little time before the election takes place a car bomb goes off taking out one of the presidential candidate's motorcades and kills the wife of the presidential candidate and many innocent bystanders. Everything OK so far, story-wise.
As the story progresses, fingers point in directions away from a Middle Eastern inspired hit and point closer to home. Again, story progresses well. As a matter-of-fact, the author is up to his usual high writing standards. Inclusion of truly interesting characters: campaign manager, Swiss bankers, elusive hit man living in Greece, and more. Then, we come to the end.
The end seems like the author threw up his hands and said "what do I do next. Don't know, maybe just break a couple of major federal laws, have a principle character act totally out of character, not have any true justice take place." Maybe there was an editor yelling, "I need that book NOW, so end it, Vince" Act of Treason has the most awkward ending to a book I have ever come across. Not unlike ending a hearty meal and sucking on a sour lemon - whatever came before has been obliterated by its very presence.
So, what would have been a 4.75 star book drops down to 2. Hopefully #9 will be better.
| | Flynn keep them coming.... by Jeffrey Roberts (Long Island, New York United States) 4 Stars October 04, 2009 Each book in the series is awesome, just when I think they will drop off, they continue to surprise....I am so happy I found Vince Flynn and Mitch Rapp this year, it had made my beach days awesome.....I am only sorry, there are only 2 left for me to read in the series....so far.
| | Entertaining... that's about it. by Harry M. Shin (Livermore, CA USA) 4 Stars September 24, 2009 1. I've read several V. Flynn's books and this is another good / solid entertaining book; nothing less, nothing more.
| | Thank goodness I got this book out of the bargain bin... by aatdb (91750, California United States) 1 Stars September 08, 2009 This book must have been a great read for Dick Cheney fans. What fun to read about a world where torture works, a super agent gets to act as judge, jury and executioner, and there is absolutely no doubt about who the good guys and the bad guys are.
