| Finally, a book that focuses on Solutions rather than problems! by Helen Thomas (Houston, Texas) 4 Stars July 02, 2005 Some reviews are simply unfair. I don't believe a book can lack solid research foundation when the book itself states that it was not created for that purpose. The preface of this book clearly states that it was never designed to focus on the research, health risks and dangers associated with abusing sugar. It states that this book was not intended for people who are looking for that type of information. According to what I read in the book it was written for people who already know what the research says/people who already know about the "dangers" of abusing sugar. It states that this program is for people who want to focus on the solution rather than the problems associated with abusing sugar. So if you are interested in stopping your addiction to sugar rather than reviewing research/dangers related to the subject, this is a great tool that will help you do just that. This book clearly states its objectives and then clearly follows them. It would probably be best to use the "search inside the book" link before purchasing any book. It lists the table of contents, introduction etc. This helps us buyers to know what is inside the book before making a purchase. I don't know what I would have done without this book. I am a woman who has tried everything and nothing has made me feel as successful at killing sugar cravings as this book has. I found other programs strict and rigid and this one relaxed and easy to follow because it allowed me to move at my own pace. Moving at my own pace is the reason I feel this has worked for me. Don't get me wrong, those of us who want to learn about the addiction itself and reasons we are addicted to sugar have the right to do so. As for me, I just want the madness to stop and this book definately helped me reach my goals.
| | Workbook that lacks research foundation by S. Birch (Corona, CA USA) 2 Stars June 28, 2005 This is the only book I ever returned to Amazon.com. I am following the program outlined in Kathleen DesMaison's "Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program," and was looking for additional information/inspiration about overcoming sugar addiction.
If I had known it was a lock-step workbook that lacks a solid research foundation, I never would have ordered it.
| | Lost 30 pounds kicking the sugar habit!! YEAAAA! by Bowling Christina (Italy) 5 Stars April 29, 2005 This is the first book I have ever read that gave me suggestions in exercises and then asked me "what I think" or "what I wanted to add to each exercise". It respected that I should have a say-so in my own treatment/recovery. That's a new approach! I really felt that the author cared about what I needed personally. I never got the feeling that I was being treated "just like all the rest". I was able to taylor the exercises to my own personality. I believe this is why the program worked so well for me. I was sold when I read the O.S.A. Affirmation at the beginning of the book because I actually felt like the author had described me perfectly. I say it every single day as suggested. I have lost 30 pounds (of pasta) already. I believe taking the stress out of overcoming sugar addiction made the biggest difference in my ability to LET THE SUGAR GOOOOOO.
| | THIS PROGRAM REALLY WORKS!! by Sugar-Free Megg (Chicago, Illinois) 5 Stars April 14, 2005 This book is a MUST PURCHASE! I am actually SUGAR FREE for the very first time in my life! I still find it hard to believe that someone like me could actual succeed at this. I love the way the author set the book up. Ms. Rufus designed the book in a way that encourages people to set up a small sugar addictions support groups and to work with peer partners. The peer partner is supposed to contract with you to encourage you and support you during weak moments (sort of like Alcoholics Anonymous when the addicted person gets a sponsor). This really helped me. I only have 3 people in my support group but it has been an awesome experience for all of us. It is so nice to work together with people just like me who are also trying to give up their sugar addictions. It is even better that the books O.S.A. Program supported us as a group and also as individuals. Half of the book is filled with detailed exercises but unlike other books, these exercises leave room for you to incorporate your own ideas into them. It allows you to revise the exercises so that they fit your personality and abilities. I never felt like I was being forced to or expected to do more than I wanted to do. Part of the book is exercises and the other half is a journal for you to chart your progress daily. This book is worth the price. There's even an online sugar addictions support group to go along with it, in case you don't want to start your own group but still need support. A few graduate students I know are doing the program without a group. Each person just chose a peer partner to encourage them. Both ways work fine as far as I've heard. Either way. This program is impressive and worth every penny I spent on it!
