Product Description
GETTING HIP is a personal account of one woman's recovery from a total hip replacement. From the painful arthritic deterioration of her joint, to making the difficult decision to have surgery at the relatively young age of 47, Sigrid Macdonald takes us with her on her postoperative journey. She discusses how to prepare for hip surgery and the potential complications of the operation. A detailed description of her rehabilitation is provided, along with interviews with 10 people from all over the world, whose recovery time from hip surgery varied considerably. This reader friendly book is written with wit, candor, and empathy for the prospective hip patient. It offers useful tips for acquiring essential services and coping physically and psychologically with hip surgery, as well as important information about how to treat a new hip in order for it to last as long as possible. GETTING HIP provides the most up-to-date information on different implants, such as the ceramic hip, which received FDA approval in February of 2003, the metal on metal prosthesis, hip resurfacing and exciting advances in cartilage regeneration and stem cell transplantation. It also provides an extensive bibliography and Internet references.

Not current with 2009 Technology by Dr. Stewart I. Perim (Sallisbury, MD) 1 Stars

Having had hip resurfacing, this book made me shutter at my prospect and prognosis. The author is biased towards her own experience (painful) and does not update with current technology or hospital stays. Read this book if you want to "psych" yourself up for the surgery in a negative way. Information on the internet is more uptodate, Medline, NIH, Youtube, etc.

Courage by Robyn Y. Demby (Goldsboro, NC) 5 Stars

I find medical survival stories fascinating, so when I came across the excerpt of Getting Hip, I was riveted. I don't need a hip replacement, nor do I know anyone who does, so I read this book from another angle and still gained something from it. I learned that my own problems are insignificant compared to those who have truly struggled. I learned we can push through our pain if we keep our eyes focused on the healing beyond it. I learned that no matter how bad our problems are, there is always someone else out there who is suffering more. Even Sigrid took a moment to look beyond her own pain and thought of those who may have been in worse shape then she at the time. She gave accounts of others who had been through the same experience to show how different people also handled a total hip replacement. That made her research even more thorough. Sigrid came out a stronger person on the other end and after I finished reading this book, I gained an even greater respect for her. This book is more then a well researched guide on hip surgery. Beginning with Chapter One, it is an account of a woman who displayed determination, courage, and forgiveness during what must have been the most challenging times of her life.

Honest, direct,, heartfelt story by Linda K. Delaney (Syracuse, New York) 4 Stars

The author's honest, direct, yet heartfelt story of her total hip replacement was a quick and interesting read. Although she had other health complications, and ventured through the Canadian medical system - her journey could belong to anyone. This should be read by anyone contemplating or preparing for hip replacement surgery.

With the active life style created by competitive sports and aerobics, along with injuries, the need for THR is becoming more common. Gettig Hip provides well researched and valuable insight into the do's and dont's of having a THR. Although everyone's journey has their own story, Sigrid MacDonald's story is honest, engaging and one that many will be able to relate to going through similiar circumstances. The book also talks about hip resurfacing, which is an interesting alternative, and gives many tips for recovery.

I thought the book was very scarey in the author's view of her hip replacement. She seemed to have a lot of other problems, not only physical but mental. I bought the book for my husband who is having the surgery in the near future. This book was so negative and disheartening,I never let him read it.He did read two other books which were much more informative, and written in a more positive format.
