EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description The purpose in the choice of the title The Statin Damage Crisis is to draw attention to the thousands of statin damaged people who have written to Dr Graveline about their disabling neuropathies, myopathies and a variety of neurodegenerative conditions such as ALS and Parkinsonism associated with statin use. Although much of the book's content will be familiar to readers of Statin Drugs Side Effects, ( this was originally planned as a new edition ) the Statin Damage Crisis adds much new material that Dr Graveline has learned of in the past two years. Dr Graveline states: "Early on my NASA doctors told me my amnesia response to statins was nothing but a coincidence but I persevered to write my first book, Lipitor, Thief of Memory." "Then I learned of statin damage to nerves and muscles and profound behavioral and personality changes, demanding I write a second book, "Statin Drugs Side Effects." Even this broadly encompassing book was insufficient to describe what I have learned more recently of the truly dark side of statins - their ability to alter the very fabric of our makeup." "I had long wondered why muscle and nerve damage seemed permanent and even progressive like my own ALS-like condition. Now I have found that the ultimate effect of statins on CoQ10 and dolichols is to damage the DNA of the mitochondrial life-force within our cells - mitochondrial mutation masquerading as premature old age." |

| Dr Graveline knows his stuff by Frank Cooper 5 Stars November 22, 2009 I have been investigating the subject of cholesterol for twenty years, and fully agree with Dr Gravelines findings.
Dr Graveline must be commended for his outstanding efforts in researching this subject, and warning the public about the dangers of lowering their cholesterol levels. Our bodies need cholesterol, which is found in large quantities in every cell in the human body.
Most people are not aware that brain cells and nerve cells require significant quantities of cholesterol. That is why reducing your body's cholesterol level below your natural level by taking prescription drugs, may be a dangerous strategy.
Lowering your cholesterol by artificial interventions such as statin drugs, can lead to early Alzheimer-like symptom that are permanent and irreversible.
Cholesterol is a key building block for the proper functioning of nerve tissue and brain cells. In fact, cholesterol is one of the primary molecules in the human brain and makes up nearly 8% of the dry weight of the brain. In other words, it's essential to your ability to think, remember, and to act.
Cholesterol is also the precursor molecule for the production of Vitamin D, testosterone, oestrogen, cortisol and other hormones which are essential if you want to feel healthy, happy and energetic. In short, you would not be alive if you did not have lots of cholesterol in your body.
The blind faith held by most practicing MDs to push cholesterol-lowering drugs onto the population is alarming. We are fortunate that we have the internet now to help consumers get the correct facts about cholesterol.
I have met Dr Graveline and he is a very genuine medical doctor and researcher who was the first to successfully alert the public to the risks of statins, and how they can damage brain neural cells. We should be grateful that he had the foresight to educate us on the dangers of statins. We should also be grateful that he had the courage to `speak out' against the medical establishment that so willingly promotes these statin drugs.
As a practicing Naturopath and Clinical Nutritionist myself, and author of the book `Cholesterol & The French Paradox' my research into cholesterol has been extensive. So I think I am well qualified to say confidently that Dr Graveline knows his facts.
One question that we are often asked is what level of cholesterol is actually normal? You need to know that the current 'cholesterol guidelines' are not based on `norm groups' which is how we usually determine what is normal. The fact is that the current 'cholesterol guidelines' are a `best guess' from a group of medicos.
So are cholesterol and heart disease linked? The answer is no. Let me explain:
The people in the UK and France have similar cholesterol levels. However, a male in the UK has three times the chance of having a heart attack compared to a French person, even though they have the same cholesterol levels. This is just one example that demonstrates that cholesterol and heart disease are not linked.
Did you know that the average cholesterol level of males in the 46-64 age group in France is 6.1mmol/L (235 mg/dl). Of course, not everyone can be exactly that level, and the `average spread' for French males is between 5.1 and 7.1 (equiv 200 - 278 mg/dl) and anyone within that range would be normal.
So then why do doctors in the USA and Australia recommend that cholesterol levels be less than 5.1mmol/L (200mg/dl)? Please investigate that question in more depth, through further reading into cholesterol, to protect yourself from over-zealous prescribing by well-intentioned physicians.
Thank you Dr Graveline for taking the time in educating others for no personal gain.
| | Statins Save lives; no significant evidence for neurological side effects by Gregory S. Pokrywka MD (baltimore, md USA) 1 Stars September 25, 2009 Have not yet read this book ( I will read it; want to keep an open mind) but the recent National Lipid Assn. task force on statin safety (Am J Cardiol 2006;97[suppl]:89C-94C) states : "The conclusion from these data is that the potential risk of peripheral neuropathy with statin therapy is very small, if it exists at all. Our neurology experts do not believe that such a relation exists and speculate that cases of peripheral neuropathy in patients taking statins are likely to be idiopathic in nature." "As for dementia and cognitive impairment, there is practically no evidence to support a link with statin therapy. In fact, statins may actually improve cognition."
The comment about doctors receiving our knowledge about statins through PHARMA is inaccurate and insulting. Yes we DO receive info from PHARMA, but it is a trivial amount of info compared with our years of study and learning, and the published literature and cme learning that we do.
I would urge patients to get their information through well educated and informed internists, FP's and cardiologists, the National Lipid Association [...] , and Board Certified Clinical Lipidologists (found on the NLA website), rather than the type of anecdotal evidence apparently used in this book, and quoted from individuals on this review site. Statins have been proven to save lives and reduce morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases, and have a proven track record of safety dating back to 1987. It's a fact ! I would urge patients NOT to "throw the baby out with the bathwater", because of unexplained mysterious symptoms some individuals mistakenly attribute to what they perceive as an easy target- statins.

| | Dr. Graveline is exposing the health dangers of taking risky statin drugs by Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Man (Spartanburg, SC) 5 Stars September 23, 2009 If anyone knows about "statin damage" in the world today, it's got to be former astronaut Dr. Duane Graveline. As a medical doctor himself, Dr. Graveline realized that something was gravely wrong with him when he went to see his NASA physicians for his annual checkup and they diagnosed him with having amnesia as well other other neurological problems. At the time he was taking the popular statin drug Lipitor for his "high cholesterol" and was none the wiser about what this prescription was doing to him until he began researching it more for himself.
What Dr. Graveline discovered about these popular statins like Lipitor and Crestor is that they do a lot more damage to people than the FDA are letting on to the public and he sincerely believes we are in a state of "crisis" from it as a result. I used to take both Lipitor and Crestor myself prior to losing 180 pounds on the Atkins diet in 2004 and I experienced massive muscle and joint point that was so excruciating. Even now, five years later, I STILL have trouble with my finger joints getting sore when I play recreational sports like basketball or volleyball as a result of the damaging effects of taking these cholesterol-lowering medications.
This book explains exactly how statin drugs work, what they are physically doing to your body when you take them, why "high cholesterol" isn't the great health disaster that these pharmaceutical companies and medical professionals want you to believe it is, how chronic inflammation from consuming too many carbohydrates is a much bigger health issue to deal with regarding heart health, the role recommended diets like low-fat have played in this national calamity, and proven ways to reduce inflammation without the use of these risky statin drugs. Dr. Graveline has lived it himself, so he knows exactly what he's talking about. Reading his story of how he is struggling to this day because of what the statins did to him in both sad and eye-opening. He has committed his life to exposing this for all the world to see.
If you or someone you know is suffering from a statin-related illness which could include ALS, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, chronic neuromuscular degeneration, Gulf War Syndrome, or aches in your joints and muscles while taking one of these drugs, then you owe it to yourself to read what Dr. Graveline has to share in this amazing book. He is trying to save millions more from suffering the same ill effects that he has while educating them that they probably don't need to be taking that statin prescription to begin with if they want to protect themselves against heart disease. Highly-recommended for anyone concerned about living healthy and staying healthy.
| | A Great Health Risk Uncovered by Merri (Houston) 5 Stars September 12, 2009 This is personal account backed by exhaustive research and case studies (references cited) by a NASA doctor who experienced the devastating effects of statin drugs, called cholesterol-lowering drugs (zocor, lipizor, etc.)
The information, evidence, and conclusinve proof that statin drugs cause premature aging, impotence, muscle and brain degeneration without the beneficial claims touted by doctors who are not effectively informed by the pharmaceutical industry is presented in densely-written pages. Avoidance of such medication becomes an imperative. Dr. Graveline has been quoted by numerous creditable sources such as pharmacist and author Shane Ellison and Dr. Stephen Sinatra, Integrative Cardiologist. | | Librarian researches, finds surprise! by Mike Starry (Fresno, CA United States) 5 Stars September 08, 2009 Here is how my letter to my MD started: "Based upon adequate research that I have correlated with my perceptions, symptoms, physicians diagnoses, and feedback from friends and family, I will be avoiding the statins' effects including, but not limited to*, memory loss, fatigue, premature aging, amnesia, and muscle damage by stopping my statin prescription. I assure you that I am a victim of all of these statin effects. By avoiding statin prescriptions, as you have said, I may die, but I want my mind and body back if that is possible, before that happens. After 31 years of hard work as a professional librarian I can earnestly tell you that I have done my best to research this subject, and I am thoroughly convinced that there is much more to this topic than the sales rep's have revealed to you. Somewhat exaggerated: "The Big Pharma motto is: Manage symptoms, manage numbers, and never under any circumstances make someone healthy so they don't need a drug." Based upon my experience Big Pharma statin producers are corrupt. See:
[...]
I Googled, PubMeded, etc., but this book condences it all. The pro-active chapters are the ones that list food supplements that help you avoid statins or may help repair statin damage
12: Anti-Inflammatory Alternatives to Statins
and
16: Mitochondrial Mutations
It will be a long road folks, but some day statins may be pulled from all of the pharmacy shelves. We can write the ethical law makers.
My surprise ? : My best friend 's "developmentally disabled" son will not take statins. He refuses to take them. Not so slow is he? I do not know what his specific spoken complaint is, but he knows something is wrong with that drug.
All of us should KNOW THE TRUTH too for our own self protection.

| Hidden Truth about Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs by Shane Ellison (Author)
As a drug chemist for a leading pharmaceutical company I made a startling discovery: you do not have to be dependent on FDA approved drugs to avoid heart disease. In fact, research clearly shows the opposite. You don't need a single prescription drug to avoid this killer. Consider this: FDA approved drugs, used as prescribed, are killing over 125,000 people every year. Nationally, this makes prescription drugs the fourth leading cause of death after cancer, heart disease and stroke. ...
