See how students rate their campus when it s time to look beyond the brochures and talk about the issues that really matter.Introduction from the Author When people ask me where I m going to college, I ll sheepishly reply, Carnegie Mellon University. It s with a look of sheer stupefaction that they nod approvingly, having never heard of the school and thinking me a fool for receiving my college education from a grocer. On the other hand, the people I talk to who are aware of the University s incredible accomplishments respond differently. Their faces light up and they energetically reply, Really? Wow, you must be smart! The way things are going, I might be hearing this reply much more often. Carnegie Mellon University is growing and improving so rapidly that its name recognition hasn t caught up with it yet. It s only in the last twenty years that the University has begun its ascent into the upper echelon of the nation s colleges, a place where it is sure to stay for some time. If one thing is happening on campus, it s growth. As the University expands its size and academic options, the school s students continue to grow with it. Carnegie Mellon is intent on molding its students into professionals, and it succeeds. Honestly, I d never even heard of Carnegie Mellon until it was time for my college search. It s hard to paint an accurate portrait of the school with just facts and statistics. CMU has a unique cultural dynamic that defines the University in the eyes of its students. When you have a professional University, composed of five nationally-commended colleges in fields ranging from computer science to the fine arts, you re guaranteed a certain level of intellectualism. When you have students from around the world participating in a campus environment where diversity is embraced and treasured, all wrapped in the hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, you re guaranteed a certain level of perspective. Some students would even say that when you have a Carnegie Mellon degree, you re guaranteed a certain level of salary. If you re interested in CMU, you probably already know all that it can offer you in terms of academics and professionalism. Now be prepared to ask yourself a larger question. Do you want to spend the next four years of your life there? No matter how much information you know about a college, that s not an easy question to answer. Hopefully, this book can provide you with some insight into what life is really like at Carnegie Mellon University. Daniel Lieberman, Author Carnegie Mellon University

Marginally better than no information by Peter Simon (lost in space) 3 Stars
February 15, 2009
I got my undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon and am currently in a PhD program here, so I have a feel for the place. I have also attended several other universities. I am damn glad that I wasn't influenced in my selection of CMU by this book. While it presents a reasonably accurate picture of the school on very superficial grounds, it ignores the all important surrounding community and Pittsburgh itself. You simply don't get a feel for the ambience of the place as a whole. It may be right about the dorm food, it's awful, but you're not going to school to eat gourmet meals so who cares? Yes, it is somewhat of a nerd school, but if you are even considering coming here you ought to be serious about your schooling. Save your money rather than buying this book. Visit the place, instead. I should point out it is dead wrong about the women. There are proportionally as many beautiful women attending CMU (as well as on the adjoining University of Pittsburgh campus) as there are at any of the other schools I have gone to.

Welcome to College Prowler®

During the writing of College Prowler’s guidebooks, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. We think it’s important that our readers get honest information and a realistic impression of the student opinions on any campus—that’s why if any aspect of a particular school is terrible, we (unlike a campus brochure) intend to publish it. While we do keep an eye out for the occasional...

Introduction from the Author

Coming from the northwest corner of the United States, people are often befuddled when I tell them I go to Northwestern University. “Is that in Seattle?” they ask. Apparently, word hasn’t reached Portland, Oregon yet about this ever-demanding, challenging, and intriguing school in suburban Chicago.

Most people already know—or think they know—about Northwestern: fairly small school, right outside of Chicago, excellent academic...

New York University Students Tell It Like It Is
Any NYU student will tell you that if you want a traditional college campus, then NYU is not the school for you. The city atmosphere is fast-paced and hectic, and if you get too caught up in it, your grades could be affected. This is not to say that it is impossible to go to school here; you just need to find a balance between all the excitement of the city and your studies. Students love...
