Product Description
Among Giants is a series of composite depictions created to articulate life lessons to a world often blinded by negative views of people of size. No real names, locations, time periods or scenarios have been used, although all of the stories reflect the possibilities and tragedies that can occur in any city in this country. Among Giants blends the fictional characters and actual clinical screening tools with Dionne's Bariatric Body Types to express a far greater diversity within the population of size. The book identifies that greater diversity exists in the population of size. Two patients may exist who demonstrate an apple distribution and each weighing about 750 pounds. One seeks out a face down prone posture while the other seeks out a reclining chair posture. The first individual does not need oxygen while the second requires oxygen 24 hours a day and a machine to help him breath at night. They are opposites in clinical presentation. If the caregiver fails to recognize their unique presentation, the result could be catastrophic and life threatening. This book explains that there are at least six presentations in the population of size. There are patients who present with dominance of mass between their thighs and those who have it on the outer flank of their lower bodies. They are completely different in clinical presentation. Among Giants identifies that greater diversity does exist in the population of size. This book takes the reader into the world of healthcare that is often never seen or talked about. Mr. Dionne creates 6 fictional characters to articulate Dionne's Bariatric Body Types and to express the courageous stories that exist.

I, too, am a physical therapist who recently started working with the patients of size that Dionne has so professionally presented. His insight into their mobility challenges and solutions are incredible. Reading his interpretations of the issues that these patients face made so many of my experiences finally "make sense". Most importantly, he did a great job of representing the patient of size as one who is to be respected and be the most important member of the interdisciplinary team that treats them.
