Product Description
"Sacred's not a word I've ever much liked. But maybe some things, and some places, just are.  And maybe the Blue Hole was one of those things." Shelby (nicknamed Turtle) never had any female friends. But when a mysterious girl from Sri Lanka moved to town in the summer of 1979, Turtle invited her to a secret haven: the Blue Hole. Turtle had no idea how much that simple gesture would affect the rest of her life, or the lives of those she loved. In a time when America was technically well beyond the Civil Rights era, there were those in Turtle's small Appalachian town who rejected the presence of someone different. And in just one summer-in a collision of love, hate, jealousy, beauty, and a sacred, muddy swimming hole-nothing and everything changed.

Best New Novel I've Read in Ages by M. Mueller (USA) 5 Stars
November 17, 2009
Thank you Joy, for a beautifully crafted book! I have not read many "new" books for some time (missing really good ones, no doubt) because I have been disappointed so often. They feel thin and incomplete and sometimes downright boring. Even the books I enjoy reading for the plot rarely grab me and make me CARE about the characters. Not so with "Blue Hole!" Joy's descriptions make me feel the warmth of the sun, the sawdust beneath my feet, the rope burns, the sweat. Her words are often more poetry than prose, but they never feel pretentious or self-conscious, and the descriptive passages build, rather than distract from, the story. But it was the character development and the plot that completely sucked me in! How perfectly she captures that "I love her but I hate her" jealousy of a teenage girl toward her friend and rival. How effectively she makes us feel the fear and guilt and ambivalence about speaking up and not speaking up about injustice. I enjoyed the book from the first sentence, but about half way through the book the plot snagged me in that can't-put-it-down kind of way. Now that I've finished the book, I miss spending time with the characters, the sure sign of a good book for me. This is a beautiful, disturbing, tender book. Don't miss it!

Recently read this in our book club and needless to say it was unanimously loved and made for a very deep and lively discussion. Touching relationships, innocence, deep bonds, everything that makes a great book. Story was very well done. By all means put in on your list for a unforgettable read.

We purchase this book for our 5th annual Author! Author! fundraiser and we sold all but one book. I consider this book to be as good as "To Kill a Mocking Bird". IT should become a classic.

AMAZING find! by Jacqui B (Illinois) 5 Stars

This is one of the best I've read in a while.. and I read a lot! What a little gem of a story! Even thought it revolves around a pack of mangy teenage kids, and the main character is a 14 year old girl, I had no problem getting sucked right in! My sister-in-law was the editor of this book which is how I heard about it.. and I'm only sorry I didn't read it sooner!

A beautiful story by Sharon K. Souza (Acampo, CA) 5 Stars

I'd give Blue Hole Back Home 6 stars if I could. It was the best book I read all last year. I'm reading it a second time now, as it's the first selection of a newly-formed book club I'm a member of. Not only is this a hauntingly beautiful story, but Joy Jordan Lake's prose is nothing short of delicious. The images her words conjur are rich and wonderful. As an author, she ranks with the very best.

Why Jesus Makes Me Nervous: Ten Alarming Words of Faith

Why Jesus Makes Me Nervous: Ten Alarming Words of Faith
by Joy Jordan-Lake (Author)

Jesus offers grace and mercy, but he's also ratcheted up all the rules.

Nice as it would be to frame Jesus as fun-loving, or a mercy-dispensing friend, the stories we have about him are a lot more disturbing than that.

We hear about celebrations that began as a wake, and about people who didn't use their talents well being bounced clear out of the club. Jesus clearly thought that following the way of truth involved a lot more than simply avoiding things like murder, stealing,...
