EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Finally, after four hit novels, Carrie Fisher comes clean (well, sort of ) with the crazy truth that is her life in her first-ever memoir. In Wishful Drinking, adapted from her one-woman stage show, Fisher reveals what it was really like to grow up a product of "Hollywood in-breeding," come of age on the set of a little movie called Star Wars, and become a cultural icon and bestselling action figure at the age of nineteen.Intimate, hilarious, and sobering, Wishful Drinking is Fisher, looking at her life as she best remembers it (what do you expect after electroshock therapy?). It's an incredible tale: the child of Hollywood royalty -- Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher -- homewrecked by Elizabeth Taylor, marrying (then divorcing, then dating) Paul Simon, having her likeness merchandized on everything from Princess Leia shampoo to PEZ dispensers, learning the father of her daughter forgot to tell her he was gay, and ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.Wishful Drinking, the show, has been a runaway success. Entertainment Weekly declared it "drolly hysterical" and the Los Angeles Times called it a "Beverly Hills yard sale of juicy anecdotes." This is Carrie Fisher at her best -- revealing her worst. She tells her true and outrageous story of her bizarre reality with her inimitable wit, unabashed self-deprecation, and buoyant, infectious humor. |

| This book doesn't do the author, actress and person justice... by C. Funk (Illinois) 2 Stars November 24, 2009 I agree with a LOT of the low ranking reviews as I, too, felt that this book was lacking a lot of depth and at the same time trying too hard to be funny. I think Carrie Fisher is a great actress and in her interviews a really down-to-earth person considering what she grew up with. The only part I found funny in this book was when she confessed to changing her accent into a British one in some of the scenes in "Star Wars". I always thought that was funny...and I am glad she addressed it!!! I'm not big into memoirs, but I was eager to get this one and was greatly disappointed!!!
| | NOT TOO LONG OR DETAILED by COOL JEWEL (MACEDONIA, OHIO USA) 3 Stars November 21, 2009 I ADMIT THIS BOOK HAS SOME HUMOR AND INTERESTING PARTS, BUT OVERALL IT IS VERY SKIMPY. CARRIE DOES MAKE FUN AT HERSELF, PARENTS, FORMER MATES AND MANY MORE. THE MOST INTERESTING PARTS ARE ABOUT HER DRINKING, DEPRESSION AND THERAPY STORIES. I HAVE NOT READ ANY OF CARRIE'S OTHER BOOKS AND DON'T PLAN TO. I BOUGHT THIS BOOK USED AND I RECOMMEND OTHER READERS TO DO SO. TO PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS IS TRULY NOT WORTH IT. I THINK THAT CARRIE IS BRIGHT AND WITTY AND HAS SUCCESS WITH OTHER BOOKS. I THINK SHE COULD HAVE DONE MUCH BETTER THAN THIS. THE FORCE WAS NOT WITH CARRIE WHILE SHE WROTE THIS SO-SO BOOK.
| | Funny as a fat, dead gay man in your bed by Jonathan S. Mark (Alexandria, VA USA) 5 Stars November 20, 2009 Which when you think about it, shouldn't be all that funny. But the formerly drug-addled Ms. Fisher manages to laugh all the way to sobriety, or at least until the next incident.
I think very highly of her. The book is hilarous, amusing, sometimes moving. She uses language in inventive ways. You'll just have to read it.
| | booklover! by Book Lover (United States) 5 Stars November 19, 2009 I must admit I'm somewhat pro Carrie Fisher. I don't always agree with her views however the fact that she can find the humor in situations that would send most people in a tailspin is amazing, funny and uplifting. She is not always politically correct, which is very refreshing, and is somewhat earthy in her delivery. The way she relays her experiences you feel like you were right there with her saying "can you believe this? and then doubling up with laughter. She's been through a lot and still sees the humor and excitment in life. She is also an inspiration to people suffering with various forms of mental illness and the stigma attached by society. I love this book!
