EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Trichotillomania has been part of the life of Gary Hennerberg since the age of six. His personal story takes you deeply into his thoughts as he searches for ways to cope with the baffling urge to pull his hair. In this book, Gary reveals three ways he has learned to co-exist with trichotillomania: his faith, self-acceptance, and discovering his gifts and talents. This is a book of hope, inspiration and encouragement for people who feel isolated and powerless over trichotillomania and other mysterious compulsive disorders. As a child, Gary believed he was the only person in the world who pulled his hair and he kept his hair pulling urge a secret. Today we know trichotillomania (also called trich or TTM) is silently suffered by as many as 10 million people. Compulsive hair pulling creates deep shame and loss of self-esteem. While his prayers to stop the urge to pull his hair were never seemingly heard or answered, Gary later recognizes that his prayers were answered in unexpected ways. |

| I loved this book... by Susan M. Avilla (Central California) 5 Stars January 03, 2010 Gary Hennerberg's book, Urges, not only offers hope and inspiration for people with trichotillomania, I believe the book is also the first written by a male about his own personal journey with TTM. Gary takes the reader directly into the mind and thinking of someone with TTM, from his first pull as a child to his final chapter he titled Turning Point, which brought tears to my eyes. His honest account of the emotions involved with wanting to pull, his detailed description(s) of buying a hair piece and later, shaving his head, and his deep faith in God that he was created with TTM, are all brought together in a journal-like fashion that not only brings comfort to myself, as I have TTM, but also would enlighten any reader to understand the complex nature of this affliction. I believe many of us will never forget the defining moment we discovered a medical name for what we did, trichotillomania. I highly recommend this book to anyone with TTM or to individuals who wish to learn about TTM. Those individuals, particularly male, that may be so fortunate to find Gary's book in the beginning of their journey will be encouraged to accept who they are and to be content, in spite of TTM.
| | ... sometimes the light of a single candle will dispel the darkness... by Eric S. Zipp (DFW, TX) 5 Stars October 18, 2009 I would think the world is unequally divided into two groups, the `majority share' having never heard of the word "Trichotillomania" and having no inkling of what it means... and the other group which can relate to this condition on a very personal level.
The challenge would be how to write a book that will be balanced enough to capture the interest and attention of each of the afore mentioned `groups'. I found this book to be extremely well written, in that it documents the `journey' of Gary from childhood into manhood in such a manner that the book is both an enlightening and entertaining read.
As the pages turn, one by one, you find yourself looking over Gary's shoulder as he makes his way down this path that has been laid out before him. For those dealing with the challenge of `Trich', and the personal questions and fears that are bottled up inside..., this story provides the realization that those same issues are shared by others and that there can be a resolution which can be found. For those just learning about Trich, by the time you finish the journey with Gary... your understanding of this condition will be at a very different level.
It is true that everyone must 'walk their own path' in order to reach their individual destination... but it is also true that, at times, ... `your' path may join others... so for that moment you are on the same section of road. Benefiting from what others have already discovered... can illuminate the path before you as you travel.
This book can be such a `candle' for you...
