EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This welcome guide explains how to treat tics and Tourette’s syndrome using natural and alternative therapies, from nutritional therapy, behavioral and counseling therapies, EEG biofeedback, and homeopathy to bodywork, energy medicine, and Chinese medicine. Author Sheila Rogers discusses categories of tics including spasmodic facial movements, eye blinking, mild sounds, and humming. She persuasively counters the medical establishment’s standard claim that such disorders are “mysterious” and based in genetics. The dramatic spike in cases, she argues, belies this explanation. Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourette’s takes a closer look at the environmental factors and underlying physical imbalances that trigger these conditions’ symptoms. In this second edition to Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in NaturalTreatments, Rogers offers a detailed natural treatment plan. No more will patients have to rely on traditional, drug-based treatments that often carry multiple side effects. In eight sections, the book offers advice from medical experts, the latest reports in medical research, a checklist of common tic triggers, inspirational stories from families who have successfully conquered tics and Tourette’s, and practical worksheets for readers to use in their treatment and research. Each of the 23 chapters includes a place for notes and “Takeaway Tips” summarizing key points. |

| Not alone! by M. Allen 5 Stars February 12, 2010 I am about a third way through this book and it has given me hope. My teenage son has had mild to moderate tics for a couple of years now and this book has given me some possible ideas on why and how to research this further. The personal stories are great and made me aware of how many people are going through similar situations and how many different levels of tics there are. Many thanks to the author and families in the book!
| | Mostly "non-scientific" alternative medicine by Just thinking (SLC, UT) 3 Stars December 12, 2009 I am an RN and am conditioned to favor very scientific researched evidence. Although I appreciated the books attempts to link things such as fluoride, aspartame, pesticides, mold, yeast overgrowth, and allergies to Tourette Syndrome, it seemed that most of all links were "hearsay" and letters from readers. It would say something like "many people report that eating sweet increases their tics."
Of course I believe that having a healthy body (exercising, eating well, sleeping enough) will make anyone's tics better, I couldn't buy into the stretched logic that drinking fluoride in water exacerbates tics.
After reading it I just felt completely frustrated like everything from the dust in the air to the sugar in my sons corn cereal was making his tics worse. I finally went online and watched this hour long Tourette seminar from the leading Yale expert Dr. John Walkup and I felt enormously better. You can get to it by going to the Tourette Syndrome association website and clicking on the newly diagnosed link. I was able to get the facts that I was craving.
I hope I haven't offended anyone, that wasn't my intention. This book simply wasn't what I was looking for.
| | A recommended read for those seeking other solutions to their Tourette's problems by Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 5 Stars July 11, 2009 Tourette's can be a difficult disorder to deal with, but it's treatable. "Natural Treatments for Tics & Tourette's: A Patient and Family Guide" is an alternative treatment guide for sufferers of Tourette's who don't want to turn to traditional drugs and their high saturation of side effects. With insights from various medical experts, author Sheila Rogers offers many routes to minimizing the effects of Tourette's. "Natural Treatments for Tics & Tourette's" is a recommended read for those seeking other solutions to their Tourette's problems.
| | Excellent by mom25 (NJ) 5 Stars July 09, 2009 Great read, a lot of information in here that makes a lot of sense. Put my mind at ease about a lot of things. HIGHLY recommend!!
| | A must read if you are interested in natural remedies... by A. Wolf (Hamburg, PA USA) 5 Stars May 16, 2009 If you or someone you love has tics or Tourette's and are interested in natural remedies, this book is a MUST READ. Rogers walks us through the process of identifying what triggers the tics and deciding what treatment to try. One size does not fit all - she helps us figure out what our individual problem areas are, using questionnaires and checklists. She spends a lot of time talking to parents with affected children. She acknowledges that some changes will be difficult, such as dietary changes, but she stresses involving the whole family. The book is done in a very readable style - no page long sentences or words you can't pronounce! The real life stories of 11 families was a highlight for me, as well as the memory-assisting review boxes at the end of each chapter.
