| Not what I expected... Boring recipes by Katuka (Round Rock, TX) 3 Stars November 15, 2009 I can't even remember why I decided to get this book but all I can say is that it was not what I expected. The recipes are pretty plain, and you do have to cook some ingredients on the stove top if you want the best results (of course). We are used to more complex flavors and therefore the recipes in this book just don't cut it for our taste.
| | Beyond tasty recipes that are ready when you are...only thing I'd change is to add nutritional stats by A. Chandler (Austin, TX) 4 Stars November 04, 2009 This cookbook has changed our evenings. I do some prep work in the morning, throw it in a pot and come home to a hot dinner as though I had a private chef spend the day in my home who didn't want to be paid for his or her efforts after I ate! ha! This means I have more time in the evening to walk the dogs, work out, do some chores...whatever...even if it's just more time to relax on days I need it.
However, none of that would matter if it didn't contain recipes I love. And it's packed with them...a very extensive cookbook with many many recipes so I would think it nearly impossible not to find many you love...whether you are vegan or lacto-ovo veg or just ready for an occasional meat free meal.
The nice thing is that these meals aren't just geared towards main dishes. If you already have something you want for dinner, you can also have a hot dessert ready for family or even guests when you want to spend time concentrating on cooking the main meal and not the dessert. Same with appetizers...if you want to have hot appetizers ready when your guests arrive one evening, you can be mingling or cooking the main dish and have a hot appetizer kept hot for everyone else.
Here's some favorites:
worth the wait chocolate cheesecake
almost irish stew
artichoke dip with a kick
veg paella
cheesy garlic stuffed artichokes
pecan spice cake
veg jambalaya
farm stand chili with chickpeas
enchilada inspired polenta pie
green and white bean casserole
mac and cheese florentine
5 layer veg strata with pesto
cornbread topped southwestern potpie
no hurry veg curry
chocolate peanut butter dream cake
so, that said, with yummy and perfect recipes why did it lose one star for me? This may not matter to others so I wanted to relay why it still may be a five star book for you. Ideally for me I would love to see some nutritionals...even if just the calories per serving and number of people it serves/cal. Because you may not need to watch your caloric intake I did want to point this out because, for those people (who by the way I envy greatly!) I would claim it to be a five star cookbook for you.
But most cookbooks are including the stats now because it's important to many of us and now it's so easy for an author to get via computer programs. I'll do them on my own when a cookbook is good enough that it's worth it for me to spend that time...and this one is...
I love to cook but I love to eat a good meal even more and coming home to a hot meal with more free time left in the evening for me to spend with family...well worth the price of the cookbook and enough recipes are included that we can have a hot meal waiting OFTEN. And with several casseroles included such as cornbread topped southwestern potpie you have your entire meal ready with no side dishes even needed...it's all in one!
| | Easy, Healthy, Family Pleasing Meals by Angela (VA) 5 Stars October 09, 2009 I have been cooking from this cookbook at least once or twice a week for the last 4 months, and we haven't had a bad meal yet. I do change around a few seasonings or ingredients to suit our family's taste, but the recipes in this book provide a great base for easy, quick to prepare, healthy vegetarian food that the whole family will eat. We only have one vegetarian in our family, but these meals are great for everyone. I love this cookbook!
| | Robin Robertson did it again! by Robert McRobert (Florida) 5 Stars September 29, 2009 I finally got my hands on this and I'm pleased. Robin Robertson did it again! This book is a comprehensive book of easy, healthy, and delicious recipes. The food in this book really does shine. The recipes are delicious and simple and the ingredients are all simple to find and inexpensive! If you're short on time, don't like grocery shopping or are intimidated by vegetarian cookery, this book is exactly what you're looking for. By the way, I highly recommend these:

| | Lentil Soup with Ribbons of Kale page 39 by Amy Davis (Illinois, USA) 5 Stars September 07, 2009 I only use one recipe from this book. I lost the book. Then I found a copy I made to make following the recipe easier. I am buying the book again. I may try another recipe, but I keep just using the Lenitl Soup with Ribbons of Kale....those ribbons of kale really make the soup! And a nice bread....I am going to add a little celantro next time. Peace, Amy
