| Husband educated himself on child birth!! by Frances Stcyr 5 Stars November 13, 2009 This was a great book for my husband who used this book to educate himself about child birth. This book is VERY complete and goes through everything from medicated to unmedicated to surgical birth. Even gets into what happens after birth. When we went to lamaze class my husband was ahead of the class and already knew all the answers :)
| | Birth Partner by C. Rhoday 5 Stars November 09, 2009 The Chapter on Comfort Measures during labor is helpful for those who are not aware of positioning, massage, & other strategies to soothe & ease labor pain. Excellent Book.
Explanations of hospital procedures/interventions as well.
| | Best book I read to prepare for labor by K. Nielson (Indiana) 5 Stars October 21, 2009 I was very nervous about labor, most especially about interventions (epidurals, pitocin, c-sections, etc.). The Birth Partner had up-to-date, relatively detailed information that allowed me to feel more prepared for labor. I appreciated the matter-of-fact, even tone. Even though it is clear Simkin advocates for the most natural labor possible, she doesn't use scare tactics or overblown statistics to try to convince the reader that there's only one true way to have a baby.
If you happen to need intervention (like me), it's great going in with a reasonable understanding of what's going to happen and what the risks are (and aren't!). I went to 42 weeks with my baby and had an induction with cytotec and pitocin. I was very nervous about the induction and tried many of the natural remedies suggested in The Birth Partner (though not castor oil). They didn't work, which told me my body really wasn't ready for labor. The pitocin did work, though (as it should) and many of the strategies I read about in The Birth Partner were helpful for me coping with the labor pains.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone having a book or assisting in a birth. I've lent it out a couple of times to friends and they've all had good things to say as well.
| | Excellent resource for birth partners (especially doulas) by A. Drugay (San Francisco, CA) 5 Stars October 14, 2009 Fantastic! Incredibly detailed information on labor and delivery ~ vital for any birth partner or birthing assistant! Covers everything from pre-labor preparation to positions, relaxation and support techniques, medications, potential complications, and so much more. An excellent resource for ANYONE who plans to be present at a birth!
Note: this is NOT a pregnancy book! This book is specifically about labor and delivery through to breastfeeding.
| | Thorough and easy to understand by M. Gillespie (Wasilla, AK) 4 Stars September 16, 2009 This book was recommended to me from a friend who is a doula. I found it to be comprehensive. It emphasized knowledge and preparation as the key ingredients to eliminate anxiety as you prepare for the birth. I now see my role at the time of the birth more clearly, and I can help my sister answer some key questions about pain killers and her expectations so that she will have less surprises at the time of delivery.
