EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Product Description
In this collection of short stories by a noted film director and writer, Treviño gives us an off-beat and, at times, raucous vivion of life in the barrios of Arroyo Grande, Texas. "... Fabulous Sinkhole is a collection of stories set primarily in Arroyo Grande Texas, and each one is connected with the title story by a theme of accident versus coincidence. All of them contain lively, accesible language and demonstrate the author's very gifted sense for storytelling" (Starred Review from Booklist).

CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 1 review)

new wave chicano horror fiction-oh my! by LC Bush (Orange, California) 4 Stars
May 07, 2000
I'm a teacher of Language Arts and this collection of Trevino's short stories was a hit with my at-risk readers. The first story ("The Fabulous Sinkhole") was witty and lighthearted, yet exposed the hidden realities of being in this world via the objects in and the subjects surrounding the sinkhole. The characters' voices sound as if they could live on your street; the dialogue is natural and lively. The rest of the stories in this collection follow the same formula as above but just get weirder and funnier. A great book for any young adult who doesn't like to read fiction, yet loves horror movies, comic books and stories about low-rider zombies returned from the dead to slash and burn cultural stereotypes.

"A breath of fresh air! After reminding us that any teacher who puts a book in front of a student is a reading teacher, the authors give us a teacher-tested reading course for middle and high school students. They avoid the baloney in the present reading debates by paying attention to actual students. What they propose is an apprenticeship in using a tool kit for problem solving in reading. The tool kit itself is a combination of cognitive and social...
