EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description According to Dr. Roy Walford, there's no need for plastic surgery or obsessive exercising to escape the effects of time. He argues that longevity can be significantly increased by a diet that contains all the required nutrients but about a third fewer calories. In this completely revised edition of The 120 Year Diet, Dr. Walford explains - and backs up his explanation with laboratory evidence - why he believes that the anti-aging diet can preserve one's vital, productive years and extend the human life span to well beyond its present maximum. A perfect companion to the author's The Anti-Aging Plan, this book also includes 20 days of varied high-nutrition menus that contain fewer than 1,500 calories a day. |

| Excellent book by Michel 4 Stars September 19, 2009 Great book!
A great introduction to the CR principles, the does and don'ts, and everything you need to know if you want to try. This extended edition with recipes is great, and the daily confirmation you can get from the CR discussion lists confirms what is said in the book.
A great book about dieting, CRON and the basic needs of the human body, with the ways to meet these needs (in the recipes).
To recommend to everyone concerned about cholesterol, diabetes, ageing diseases or extending life expenctancy.
| | Well written & thorough, but technical read by R. Plank 4 Stars June 08, 2009 If you're interested in the subject, this book is a thoroughly referenced and technical read. However, you could just read chapter 9 and follow the references to other chapters where you feel the need.
The motivation to plow thru the whole book is greatly lessened by the admitted fact that the diet is very difficult (technical) to implement and the benefits are reduced as you start later in life. To get the maximum benefit you'd have to start when you're ~25 when many people still feel they're indestructible. Further, if you don't do it right you end up worse off.
A significant section is dedicated to how to objectively determine if it is working, so if you're up to trying it you don't have to invest a large part of your life in it (about a year) before deciding if it's working well enough to continue (or correct mistakes).
It is interesting that the predominate criticism of this book seems to be that author only had an average life span. My understanding of the book is, given his late start on the diet, it is unlikely he expected much more than a higher quality of life.

| | Do You Live that Long; Or Does it Just Feel like It by Gary O. Shepherd (Australia) 4 Stars November 02, 2008 Dr. Walford was the leading expert in the field of life extension. This is a fascinating read, and the scientific world is rapidly accepting the good doctor's research. Following the strict regime, however, would only ever be for the very few for whom self-denial, abstinence and taste-bud boredom is a viable option.
| | A "PDR" for CR! by Pavel Somov, Ph.D., Author of Eating the Moment: 141 Mindful Practices to Overcome Overeating One Meal at a Time (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) 5 Stars October 05, 2008 There are easier, more accessible books on CR - for example, "The Longevity Diet." Walford's "120 year diet" is a kind of PDR ("physician's desk reference") for CR. And, as such, it is indispensible as a serious reference sourcebook. If you are new to CR, my suggestion is this: by the "Longevity Diet" and read it first. If "hooked," get Walford's book and read it cover to cover: if still "hooked," take the plunge. CR - is no diet - but a lifestyle and lifestyle changes - however healthy in vector - shouldn't be undertaken on a whim. Good luck... and see you in the 22nd century!
