EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description
More than 25 million Americans and 92 million worldwide suffer from liver disease and cirrhosis, a degenerative and potentially fatal condition in which liver cells are damaged and then replaced by scar tissue, impeding liver function. The disease is most commonly caused by excessive alcohol consumption, hepatitis, or complications from prescription drugs. Immediately after his diagnosis, James Dickerson set out to educate himself on all of his options — and found there is hope for recovery. Now, he offers The First Year: Cirrhosis, the first guide for patients and their families to understanding and managing this chronic condition. In clear, accessible language, the book walks readers step-by-step through everything they need to do each day of the first week after a cirrhosis diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and the following eleven months of the crucial first year. From understanding causes to coping with complications, The First Year: Cirrhosis provides medically-sound, empathetic guidance. The book includes advice on treating symptoms, extending longevity, managing stress, and getting the best care possible for anyone affected by this condition. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 6 reviews)
| Excellent info! by Susan in Newfield (Newfield NJ) 5 Stars June 20, 2009 A very useful book for information on a disease that plagues many but there is little out in recent print that covers all the questions one has if one has this disease. There's nothing like REAL info when your life is actually at stake. I gave this to someone who really appreciates it very much. Recommended!
| | Very readable. Probably the best reference for a non-medical person by John C. Cox (Seneca, SC United States) 5 Stars November 23, 2008 Note: This book is not written by a doctor.
This is both a good and a bad thing.
The good part is that it is readable. It is very informative.
It has many good points and seems well researched.
The author is a very good writer, and can guide us through the phases of Cirrhosis.
The bad part is that the book is not written by doctors -- so is not really a manual for medical diagnosis. It is not really a book for medical treatment.
Definitely seek the assistance of a Liver Specialist.
It is also written in 2006 -- so may not be current with the most recent medical treatments available.
Overall, this is a good book to have if you or a loved one is diagnosed with Cirrhosis.
| | The First Year by Cynda C. Schindler 5 Stars August 16, 2008 It was a tremendouw help in learning about and dealing with what comes with liver disease. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help and understanding while walking down this road....
| | Very Informative by SAM (Annapolis, MD USA) 4 Stars June 06, 2008 Since I have been recently diagnosed with cirrhosis I found the book to be
excellent, positive and very informative, especially since there isn't
much information out there and I hadn't actually seen a Dr. an appointment
was made. I had several symptoms and I was able to be prepared for what
was ahead. Thankyou Mr Dickerson and I wish good health to you now & in the
future!
| | Many Have Cirrhosis by C. Morse (Minnesota) 4 Stars January 27, 2008 This book is written for those who are newly diagnosed with cirrhosis as well as those who may be headed that way. It's also an excellent book for the family and other loved ones of the liver patient. Cirrhosis can be caused by hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis, alcoholism, NASH, certain medications, and other diseases. This book is highly recommended for those who want to know more about what cirrhosis is, its symptoms, its prognosis, and what transplant entails.
