Cardiac CT Imaging: Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiac CT Imaging: Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Disease
by Matthew J. Budoff (Editor), Jerold S. Shinbane (Editor)

CT is an accurate technique for assessing cardiac structure and function, but advances in computing power and scanning technology have resulted in increased popularity. It is useful in evaluating the myocardium, coronary arteries, pulmonary veins, thoracic aorta, pericardium, and cardiac masses; because of this and the speed at which scans can be performed, CT is even more attractive as a cost-effective and integral part of patient evaluation. This book collates all the current knowledge of...

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Product Description
Atlas of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography is a comprehensive atlas containing photomicrographs, anatomic illustrations, tables, and charts paired with extensive legends and explanations that are supplemented by extensive research, peer-reviewed articles, and textbooks. In addition to providing historical perspective and current direction for computed tomography, this atlas focuses on research involving coronary artery diseases and anomalies, congestive heart failure, atherosclerotic plaques and asymptomatic disease, as well as imaging techniques, including preparation, acquisition, and processing, involving the great vessels and carotids, the peripheral vasculature, and coronary and pulmonary veins. There also will be discussion of the role of computed tomography in the emergency room and in private cardiology practice.

A Good First Edition by Keith A. Comess 4 Stars
December 13, 2009
Ideally, an atlas should serve as a comprehensive image reference source, one which clearly illustrates the common (mundane, perhaps) findings, but also includes the arcana of the field, by which I mean those findings which, while rare, cannot be safely overlooked. Image quality should be superb, explanations brief although comprehensive enough to provide a basis for understanding and ought to include references to more comprehensive sources. Implicit in this is that, as a reference text, binding should be durable and paper quality adequate for multiple perusals. When judged against these standards, this atlas is adequate or better-than-adequate to the task, although not superb. The author's approach appears to be one of providing an "outline" of the discipline. Chapter order follows that of a conventional textbook, beginning with the basics and progressing through an array of common to more-or-less obscure clinical findings. The section of instrument basics contained figure legends which were too lengthy; they appeared to be an attempt to serve as a distillate of more verbose book chapters. The illustrations in the introductory sections are clear, nicely colored and easily viewed. The same general pattern was continued throughout the text (a testimony to the consistency of the editors). There was adequate representation of clinical case studies, though I would prefer a more encyclopaedic treatment given the intended purpose of the book. Perhaps the clearest application of this book is in the role of a supplement to a standard textbook. It is a convenient, albeit insufficient adjunct to CT board preparation, as noted by another reviewer. My major complaint, aside from the minor quibbles noted above, regards the cover and binding. The cover of my personal copy warped within days of opening the shrink-wrap and the binding split despite careful treatment. These may be copy-specific problems. If not, however, do not expect this book to survive long outside a private medical library. In conclusion, this is a worthy and possibly unique contribution to the newly established field of cardiac CT angiography. Despite its shortcomings, which I suspect will be rectified in future editions, it is a worthwhile addition to the imaging cardiologist's library.

Excellent book with great pictures. Makes understanding the concepts extremely easy. It's fun to review it. Found it very useful for the CBCCT board exam. Strongly recommended.

Cardiac CT Angiography Manual

Cardiac CT Angiography Manual
by Robert Pelberg (Author), Wojciech Mazur (Author)

To date, few, if any, simplified, concise, relatively small and portable books exist to ease the training in the field of cardiac CTA. There are no books written from the point of view of secondary end users who are secondarily trained. Books to date are mainly extensive, large texts that assume a certain basic knowledge. A so called "manual" and reference guide explaining this technique from beginning to end in simple prose will thus be of tremendous value.
