| It Worked by Matt Shulman (NY, NY) 4 Stars November 02, 2009 I cant believe it but this book cured me!
Although it is a tough read - the contents of the book help you overcome the pain. I highly recommend it.
| | excellent resource by Carol Y. Pang (Taipei, Taiwan) 5 Stars September 03, 2009 this book is truly an excellent resource for people suffering from GI problems. it writes in a clear straightforward manner that goes to the root of GI distress. much of what it says is similar to what Dr. Hyman (of the Ultramind Solution) says, so between these two experts, i'm pretty sure the information presented is accurate.
i recently was diagnosed with heartburn and acid relux. i was very disappointed in my GI's doctor approach which did not inquire into why i was creating so much gas that was causing the reflux in the first place. my current understanding is that the gas is caused by either H. pylori, food allergies, yeast or bacterial overgrowth. people can furhter check out Dr. Hyman's Ultrawellness blog for more info. hopefully this review will help those led astray by their conventional GI physicians.
| | Some thoughts for skinny people by SafeMommy 3 Stars August 14, 2009 First, I'd like to say that the dietary suggestions in this book, with modifications, DID ultimately help my heartburn, which was really bad. But I wasn't able to follow the suggestions at first. She suggests eating TONS of veggies, and this just didn't work for my high-metabolismed self. When I get too full, I get heartburn, and so I wanted to select only the most high calorie foods to eat. What finally made me able to follow her recommendations is when I purchased the, "World's Healthiest Foods" book, and learned how to COOK veggies in a healthy manner and then add healthy spices and lots of extra virgin olive oil (thus making veggies a more high calorie food). I find that I'm able to digest cooked veggies better than most other foods.
I don't think that yeast was my problem, though, so much as a lack of digestive enzymes for breaking down whole grains and raw veggies. Anyways, with the diet modifications (meals comprised of a majority of healthily cooked veggies), my heartburn is manageable. Oh! And I also have to carefully time my water drinking so as to not disrupt my digestive process. Kind of a pain, yes, but ultimately, I am a healthier human, and I can avoid a lifetime of Aciphex (which is SUPER EXPENSIVE--now that money goes to all the veggies I have to buy!).
| | Follow this Doctors Advice by J. Ricks (Logan, UT United States) 5 Stars April 06, 2009 This book is correct. Do not eat foods with flour, yeast, or preserves while you are recovering from heartburn. Rice gruel and Ginseng root broth helped most at the beginning, after a while I could eat normal food but I still followed this book's recommendation so I don't get sick again. For your information, rice is sticky rice for gruel (wash about 1/2 cup of rice, soak for least 30 min. to 1 hour first before boiling the rice) you can get dry ginseng root in Asian market(rinse 1 dry ginseng root, boil for 20 min with 3 cups of water in medium heat). One or two months later I felt much better. Acupuncture treatments also helped. When the doctor first told me that I had chronic heartburn I was in great pain. It felt like I had swallowed a golf ball. He instructed me to take prilosec everyday. It hurt really bad. I was told that I would have to take it for the rest of my life. Currently, I do not take prilosec and the burning stopped. I can eat a variety of foods, however I am still careful of what I eat (especially foods with preserves).
| | Tough diet but works by Alexis Ramirez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) 5 Stars April 02, 2009 I have to say that before buying this book nothing had ever worked well for me, I had suffered gastritis for 3 years when I decided to try the book, inmediatelly started following the diet, it was difficult and strict but I manage to follow it for 5 weeks, after that I decided to continue with a less strict diet, including new foods and beverages, so far (two months later) keeping the diet in combination with DGL has kept me 100% away from my symtoms.
