EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Offering serious information with a light touch, author Dawn Groves shows that by starting with a few simple changes, anyone can find a few minutes each day to take care of their bodies with exercise, sleep, and good food; their souls with meditation and prayer; and their minds with pursuits that challenge and please. Techniques such as "reframing" and "facts not stories" will help readers understand how to use thoughts to reinterpret events and issues for healthier emotional responses. She demonstrates how a few choices can change old, bad habits into new, good ones and how parents can not only cope with children but also help them become part of the lower-stress solution. Sections include What to Do in a Crisis (move your body, narrow your field, and take action), Mindfulness Tools, and Gratitude as a Resource. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 7 reviews)
| Very good book for busy people. by David K. Gordon (Michigan) 4 Stars October 21, 2009 This was a short easy to read book.
It doesn't go into great detail about stress.
It was educational with valuable information.
| | Concise. Informative. Helpful. by ServantofGod 4 Stars October 30, 2008 The author clearly demonstrated a well written and resourceful book needs not be long and complicated. As a 40+ busy male who works under heavy pressure over 60 hours a week, I find it very useful. Hope that it can help you much as well. Highly recommended!
p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.
Young people enjoy deep sleep - the most restful kind - for up to 100 minutes each night. If they shorten their sleeping time, they can make up for the loss of deep sleep in subsequent evenings. Middle aged people only average 20 minutes of deep sleep per night. That's why when middle aged people become sleep deprived, they may not be able to compensate for it easily. pg 25
Recondition yourself to associate your bed only with sleep. That means no reading in bed. pg 26
Taking long strides with arms swinging and eyes straight ahead made people feel happier than taking short, shuffling steps with eyes downcast. pg 51
The author's simple system to handle stress consists of three steps: 1. Move your body 2. narrow your focus and 3. take action. pg 61
| | Cool Stuff Makes Sense by Bart G (San Diego) 5 Stars April 14, 2005 This is a really cool book. It is easy but not stupid. Funny but not cliche. Not preachy. I bought it for some folks I manage and it helped them a lot. I heard Dawn speak and decided to buy a couple of her books. Both are great. I'm starting to meditate and thanks to Stress Reduction, I finally got what living stressed-out is doing to me. I want to keep my brain so I'm getting busy being less busy. Being smarter about it.
| | From avoiding worries to accepting a complicated world by Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 5 Stars May 02, 2004 In Stress Reduction For Busy People, Dawn Groves showcases steps to alleviating stress and offers over-stressed folks a host of effective, "user friendly" coping mechanisms each of which require no extra daily effort to deploy. From avoiding worries to accepting a complicated world with the least stress, Stress Reduction For Busy People provides a strongly recommended guide to attitude enhancements which can in themselves reduce stress.
