Three stars or 4.5? by The Possible Piercing Visionary 3 Stars
November 16, 2009
I've seen this industry and Elaine Angels' career develop since the late 80's and I was Gauntlet NYC's second customer (Elaine Angel told me so after she sold me a threaded ball, which was also what the first customer bought). This book is a good value for $20 but after looking through it I feel that Mrs. Angel could have added a lot more from her lengthy career but chose not to, seemingly to prevent this book from being too thick (and expensive) and of much use to those who would seek it out as an alternative to a formal apprenticeship. I was asked to review this book elsewhere and based on my knowledge gave it three stars (out of 5) but also gave it a public (for non-professionals) rating of 4.5 stars which is near what the ratings system here gives it. For those seeking how to pierce information in book form I still recommend the Gauntlet training manual (out of print, ask around for a copy from other piercers). Also of great interest to the APP and piercing professions is "Body Art: A Model Code And Comprehensive Guidebook" published by the National Environmental Health Association. With a letter of endorsement from the APP on page 337- but the APP keeps forgetting about this book, which makes them appear disingenuous to the profession. (Elaine Angel is an APP member). "The Piercing Bible" suffers from a lack of input from outside the APP cult of self-endorsement. First the APP claimed that their own procedure manual was the only such book even though the NEHA book and Gauntlet book were better, and under piercing procedures the instructions were that you'd learn by doing it! And now are claiming that "The Piercing Bible" is the only such book- which is a blatant lie when their "fingerprints" are all over the much better National Environmental Health Association book which was intended to influence health departments and not publicly talked about by APP members or offered by sale by the APP or to APP members. From the APP web site about "The Piercing Bible", "The APP is now offering the first and only comprehensive and authoritative book exclusively on the subject of body piercing" -APP (The Association of Professional Piercers), which is ignoring that the piercing Bible does not teach how to pierce and that the Gauntlet Training manual did! By my count "The Piercing Bible" is the third comprehensive book on the subject (not counting the APP procedure manual) My own effort "The Body Piercing Encyclopedia Volume 1 tools" also missed the mark because although it's authoritative was not comprehensive because the first 330+ page volume only covered tools, and the second volume (on procedures) was never written (or yet to be written?). I am a fully certified body artist and have been since 2002. Many other professionals in the field share the opinions I'm expressing, and without their cooperation this review would not have been possible. "The Piercing Bible" passes on a few unsupported myths about piercing tools and aftercare that novices have asked me about, which I can't defend, and that the industry does not support, but the book has lots of gems as well. There are a lot of useful insights in "The Piercing Bible" but just like the religious Bibles you can only take it all literally at your own risk. From the earliest days of modern piercing there have been "authorities" making facts up and trying to re-write history to suit personal vested interests, and for that we all suffer; but once you understand the truth of this (or don't know the truth) "The Piercing Bible" goes from my three star rating up to 4.5 stars. To earn five stars it would have to include piercing procedures and drop it's new age faith-based medical claims.

Best book about piercing out there by The Dolla (Miami, FL) 5 Stars
October 15, 2009
I picked up this book to get more info about a particular piercing that I was interested in. And to say the info that was provided was detailed is an understatement. I really like how most aspects of piercing is discussed. And she discusses about every piercing that you could think of. She talks about industry standards also and what to look for. She even talks about the different types of jewelry. I would highly recommend this book for anyone considering a piercing of any type. I am very happy with this purchase.

The piercing bible by Simon Fourstar (L.A.) 5 Stars

As a soon to be apprenticing body piercer I cannot begin to describe how valuable the Piercing bible has been for me. Having read it from cover to cover I am far more knowledgeable then when I first started. From the many varieties of piercings and their placements, jewelry styles, aftercare, what to look for in a studio, what to expect from your piercer, etc.etc. Most of what I read I did not know or wasn't even aware of before I had decided to enter the field of body piercing. It was this book that prompted me to look for an actual apprenticeship as opposed to learning from an online course and poking holes in my friends. I recommend this book to anybody remotely considering getting any kind of piercing and/or body mod work done. Elayne Angel clearly knows her stuff and we all can benefit from that knowledge $20.00 is an incredibly small price to pay.

A must have by Eric Bedelol (Long Island , NY) 5 Stars

I have been a body piercer for 9 + years now and this book is a credit to the industry. It debunks all the common myths and urban legends good and bad about piercing. This book i recommend for not just experienced and novice piercers but also for customers as well i have pointed out and physically shown many of my customers various passages from this book.
