Product Description
We spend more than 200,000 hours sleeping in a lifetime, the equivalent of more than 8,000 days. Yet research has only just begun to decode the mysteries behind what can go wrong. Here, Dr. Carlos H. Schenck, one of the most prominent sleep doctors and researchers in the country, takes us on an incredible journey into the mechanisms of sleep, and the spectrum of disorders that can occur when these mechanisms go bizarrely awry. Dr. Schenck discusses the causes and treatments for common problems-insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and more. But what sets this book apart is the rare glimpse it offers into the cutting-edge science that he and others have pioneered in identifying, understanding, and explaining the realm of "parasomnias"-the mysterious, more extreme sleep disorders, such as dream enactment, sleep-related eating disorder, sexsomnia, sleepwalking, sleep terrors, sleep paralysis, and even sleep violence, which affect at least 20 million Americans. Comprehensive, engrossing, and backed by the latest medical research, Sleep is a groundbreaking work about what continues to be one of our most mysterious medical puzzles-making it an indispensable guide for sufferers of all sleep disorders and their families.

Very informative on sleep problems by M. Watson (Newbury Park, CA USA) 5 Stars
February 04, 2009
For years I thought I was the only adult with night terrors. I tried to find out information on this topic only to get blank stares and confused looks. Even my doctors were scratching their heads. Then my husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. We had no idea how bad he was until we saw a sleep doctor. We both were hungry for more knowledge about our sleep problems and this book provides it. If you have any sleep problems or have a loved one with sleep issues, get this book..it explains everything in easy to understand language.

I first found this book at the library and found it so interesting that I bought a copy for myself (which I then lent to my uncle who has sleep issues). Very informative and cutting edge with newer discoveries. This doctor talks about a wide veritity of sleep disorders and solutions.

Fascinating Journey by Douglas P. Murphy (Charlottesville) 5 Stars
June 30, 2007
From the commonplace to the esoteric, from insomnia to sleep sex, night eating binges and sleep terrors, Dr. Schenck guides us through the fascinating panorama of unusual sleep behavior. The book gives ways to recognize and treat troublesome sleep problems, and gives a fascinating glimpse into areas of behavior we never knew existed. Numerous personal stories and relevant literary references make the journey an eye-opening pleasure at all times. The book begs the question: what else do we still not know about human behavior during sleep? I, for one, look forward to any future answers to this question.

Great overview! by Lisa Ray Turner (Littleton, CO United States) 5 Stars

This book is an excellent overview of sleep and sleep disorders. It's written in an interesting, readable way and gives great information. Some of the sleep disorders are fascinating -- Schenck goes beyond "the basics." Sleep sex? Who knew? This is a great book for anybody who's having trouble getting the sleep they need.

Heard him on the radio a few weeks ago and was so intrigued on the various sleep studies and disorders. I suffer from chronic insomnia for about three months now and finally picked up this book for a solution. It was easy to digest & offered a lot of different solutions to combat the insomnia. With prescribed medication and a change in behavioral patterns, the nights are getting better. There is also an astonishing amount of information on all kinds of sleep disorders - some I never even knew existed... check it out!
