CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 31 reviews)
| An excellent, no nonsense guide by K. Tuttle (Durham, NC) 5 Stars November 15, 2009 What an excellent guide for women facing hysterectomy. Dr.Streicher's writing is informative, honest, detailed, and caring without being overly technical or childish and touchy-feely. I had many questions that were addressed in this book, questions that this book gave me to ask my doctor, and silly anecdotal stories that were laid to rest by Dr. Streicher's frank explanations.
I am no longer as scared and horrified to be having this surgery; rather I look forward to it as a means of relief, thanks to my doctor largely, and to this book.
On another note, this book is quite readable, too. Not being a fan of non-fiction I knew I had to learn more about my surgery but was not looking forward to it; this book made it easy.
If you want grown up helpful information, this is the book for you. If you want to be treated like a child and called cutesy names ("punctured princess," please spare me) go with a fairy tale.
| | Great help in preparing for surgery and very fun read. by Pamela J. Rough (Louisville KY) 5 Stars April 10, 2009 I was very impressed with this thorough guide on hysterectomies. I had a few weeks to read it prior to my surgery and it really helped me go into the surgery with less anxiety. My biggest surprise that I acually enjoyed reading the book and found it rather amusing. I recommend it for all women, even if you aren't having surgery.
| | very good even if your choice is made, but no robotic surgery info by TD (USA) 4 Stars February 21, 2009 I'm glad I bought this book, and would definitely recommend it to anyone. Although it has lots of info about choices you can make, it's still very helpful and comforting even if you know you will have a total hysterectomy and you can skip those other parts. The style is matter of fact but friendly with a little humor in the right spots, never anything like either the one-sided opinions and scare tactics or cloying "cult of the soft pink blanket" extremes from all the non-objective sources out there. I felt confident before and after surgery from reading simple explanations and seeing the occasional diagram. Sure, you can find a lot of info online, but then you have to consider the sources and inevitably come across unhelpful horror stories. Not in this book. It's like having a smart, well-spoken doctor answer (almost, see below) all of your questions.
However, since it was written in 2004, there is no info at all about a newer method of surgery: robotically assisted laparoscopic (da Vinci System is the current brand). I was caught between my GYN & her oncology advisers who said I needed the traditional open surgery and didn't qualify for laparoscopic, since their experience is with the traditional "straight stick" laparoscopy; and info I found online about this other option. It turned out that the robotic surgery was fine for me and has a shorter recovery time and less time in the hospital, but I had to find out and decide that for myself. I would like to see an updated version of this book for other women in the near future that includes objective info on this other method, then it would be pretty complete.
UPDATE: the author added a comment mentioning a podcast by her that DOES address the newer procedures, and I find it very helpful as an addition to this book. Listen here: http://www.drstreicher.com/images/Hysterectomy.mp3
| | SHE MUST HAVE BEEN THERE by MAH (ORLAND PARK) 5 Stars February 08, 2009 THIS BOOK TAKES YOU THROUGH EVERY STEP OF THE PROCEDURE,WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER A HYSTERECTOMY. I RECENTLY HAD A TAH/BSO ON 1/13/09. THE KNOWLEDGE AVAILABLE IN THIS BOOK PUT ME AT EASE. IT WILL ANSWER ANY POSSIBLE QUESTION YOU MAY HAVE. DEFINITELY A MUST READ. MY CURRENT OB IS ALSO PURCHASING THIS BOOK AS SHE SAW ME READING IT IN THE HOSPITAL. THANKS DR. STREICHER
| | Relevant and helpful information in an understandable format by L. Carpenter (USA) 5 Stars September 18, 2008 This book covers the several different surgical procedures that can be used to perform a hysterectomy and answered many questions for me as to what to expect in terms of outcome and recovery. I thought it was very factual and informative and written in a non-intimidating and understandable manner. It includes a commentary section from women who have actually undergone the procedure and their thoughts on how they feel now, both good and bad. Within weeks after undergoing my own hysterectomy, a family member called to say she was scheduled for the procedure, at which time I loaned the book to her. I would recommend this book to any woman faced with the hysterectomy decision who is looking to make an informed choice.
