Product Description
Risky behavior can be an expression of a normal, genetically influenced personality trait, sensation seeking. Its expression in risky behaviors such as extreme and risky sports, vocations, substance abuse, unsafe sex, and crime, among others, is the topic of this fascinating and accessible book. In Sensation Seeking and Risky Behavior, Marvin Zuckerman offers a comprehensive view of the role of sensation seeking in a wide range of behaviors, from risky driving and sports through substance use, sex, and crime or other antisocial behaviors. How the personality trait sensation seeking relates to these risky behaviors is described and explained in terms of genetics, biology, attitudes, and expectancies. Insights into prevention and treatment of maladaptive forms of sensation seeking, like substance abuse and unsafe sexual activity, based on the published research, are offered. The author of this engagingly written book is one of the foremost experts in this important area of behavior.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 1 review)

Fantastic Resource for the Risk Addicted and their Therapist by M. Barrett (Portland, Oregon) 4 Stars
March 25, 2008
Zuckerman builds on his earlier work around the Sensation Seeking Personlity and draws together the most recent research and case material to hammer his points home. More extensive connectivity between risk addiction and drug abuse is brought forth as well as new categrories of risky behavior. His Summary sections concluding each chapter are wonderful as they provide honest feedback on actual treatment results or the lack thereof. Pastors, therapists, and school administrators should read through this book to get a better understanding of what afflicts (or blesses) some of us. Well done Dr. Zuckerman.

The Case Against Adolescence: Rediscovering the Adult in Every Teen
by Robert Epstein; Ph. D. (Author)

Robert Epstein, former editor in chief of Psychology Today, shows that teen turmoil is caused by outmoded systems put in place a century ago which destroyed the continuum between childhood and adulthood. Where this continuum still exists in other countries, there is no adolescence. Isolated from adults, American teens learn everything they know from their media-dominated peers...
