| Who switched off my brain by Barbara Wellington 5 Stars June 27, 2009 An amazing book to read, what a find. It explains why and how the human body gets sick which stems from the mind (brain)and then it tells you how to fix your body. Its a book for everyone who wants to improve their health and make the most of life. I can't rate it highly enough. Full marks to the author and publisher.
In a nutshell:
An attitude is a state of mind that procues a reaction in the body and a resultant behavior.
Negative emotions evolve out of fear. Positive emotions evolve out of faith. The mind and body are integrally connected.
Research shows that around 87% of illnesses can be attributed to our thought life, and approximately 13% to diet, genetics and environment. Studies conclusively link more chronic diseases (also known as lifestyle diseases) to an epidemic of toxic emotions in out culture.

| | Every Page A Gem by Martin Asiner (Jersey City, NJ) 4 Stars June 07, 2009 In 90 DAY IMMUNE SYSTEM MAKEOVER, Janet Maccaro, a PhD. in nutrition, has written a book for the layman about how a strengthened immune system can impact on the reader's life. Most readers of books on healing and natural health have more than a passing acquaintance with both and are quick to note the difference between a faddist and an expert. Maccaro falls under the latter. In her latest text, Maccaro succeeds in simplifying the enormous complexity that is the immune system. One of the unspoken truisms of this book is the notion that there are a number of givens that, when followed assiduously, will result in a heightened sense of health and well being. An upgraded immune system is one such given. Most of those who suffer from a legion of illnesses seek a common means to address them all. The advice that Maccaro gives is as close to a universal panacea that one will ever come across.
She constructs her text into three broad spectrums, with each reflecting a thirty day series of self-directed activities. Implicit in each spectrum is her belief that solid knowledge must lie at the foundation of any program of benefit. She begins each part with a theoretical framework from which she procedes to numerous pragmatic mini-chapters, all of which coalesce into the common goal of the book title--how to make over one's degraded immune system.
She begins Part One with detoxification: what it is, how to do it, and why one should do it. Maccaro writes that a detox is more complex than simply cleansing one's system of accumulated toxins. If that were all there was to it, then one need do no more than purge one's colon with colonics and enemas. What Maccaro adds is the entire range of activities that ought to accompany a detox. She notes what products to avoid--dairy, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, tobacco, salt, and wheat. She further notes what one must include as any part of a detox regimen--green superfoods, mushrooms, antioxidants, olive oils, and exercise. She includes a handy immune response questionnaire that when taken honestly reflects the extant to which one has an impaired immune system.
In Part Two, Maccaro introduces the role that sleep, fiber, and bowel function play. She includes yet another useful self-test, this time on yeast infections like Candida. If one takes this test and the score is on the high side, then Maccaro lists what to do. Maccaro further sees a reduction is the number of enzymes as a potential red flag. From here, she goes on to describe the synergism between enzymes and probiotic gastrointestinal disorders. She concludes this section with a consideration of the corrosive effects of stress on the immune system. A minor criticism here is the excessive number of times that she engages in Biblical sermonizing as a means to reduce stress. For those who like their medical education to be devoid of such, then they might skip these parts.
In Part Three, Maccaro concludes with a number of eating plans that are replete with recipes that will organically boost any immune system. She also notes of the latest (as of 2006) in scientific advances in immune system studies. Of particular interest is her analyses of IP6 (an anti-cancer supplement) and adaptogens. A more pressing criticism that I saw with her entire approach is her omission of toxins that pertain to the environment. She implies that the only toxins that one need be concerned with are those that lie in the foods that we eat. It would have been helpful had she added a chapter on the toxins that we breathe in as we go about our daily lives. Still, 90 DAY IMMUNE SYSTEM MAKEOVER is a worthwhile read for those who feel that they suffer from an impaired immune system and do not know where to turn. Maccaro's most useful book is one such place to begin.
| | Full of Great Information! by Shirley Priscilla Johnson (USA) 5 Stars June 04, 2009 It can be very frustrating when sickness seems to be overtaking your life, your world, you joy. It is even more so when the medical treatment that is available to you appears to be more frightening than the sickness you are facing. In this book by author, Janet Maccaro, she offers some light in a room of darkness.
Ms. Maccaro, holds a PHD and is well verse in nutrition and natural healing. Herself having battled in the war of infirmities she brings forth light and hope at the end of the tunnel. In this work she shares the many aspects that effect our health, be it from foods we eat to emotional struggles. She also explains how it is important to have a strong immune system, and the whys and the how's of achieving this.
She explains to you the importance of diet, tells you what to eat and what to avoid, and why. She also adds exercise and recommends good supplements. She explains fasting, body cleanse to remove toxins, and gives you a dose of Spiritual medicine as well. All of this you are encouraged to do, implement in your life, and you should see results in 90 days.
I found all of her advise extremely interesting and well founded. However, it will all come down to this: are you willing to change? How important is it to you to feel better and are you willing to make sacrifices to achieve that goal? If you are this is a great book to get you moving in the right direction, giving you a goal to shoot for, a jump-start, if you will, in the hopes of a healthier you. Interesting book, informative and very useful.
| | Mostly common sense by T. Parks (Mid Michigan, USA) 2 Stars March 17, 2009 After leafing through it, I haven't used this book. I wish I would have returned it. Much of it is very basic knowledge. Bottom line, a well balanced diet and nix the bad habits, that's what works.
| | Christian Book by Cate (Portland, OR USA) 2 Stars December 14, 2008 C.A.Harday, a reviewer below, got a little carried away in her negative review of this book, but I agree with her basic criticism. This is a Christian book with Bible citations throughout. I stopped reading when I realized the author's obvious bias. When I'm looking for information on immune system health, I'm not looking for highly-biased presentations on religion. My bias isn't against Christianity per se, it's including Christianity without fully disclosing that personal bias nor making a connection between that personal bias and the supposed educational material of the book. The author needs to be more open and honest, or she needs to leave her personal religion out of her desire to "educate" about health. She quickly burned her credibility with me.
A better book is 4 Weeks to Maximum Immunity: Disease-Proof Your Body by the editors of Prevention Magazine (2008)
