Product Description
This up-to-date electronic book on four CD-ROMs covers Fermilab, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, a United States Department of Energy Laboratory located in Batavia, Illinois. The lab features scientists carrying out research in high-energy physics to answer the questions: What is the universe made of? How does it work? Where did it come from? Fermilab conducts basic research into particle physics, investigating the building blocks of matter separated by the smallest distances that science has ever explored, trying to learn more about these fundamental particles and understand the forces that hold them together or force them apart. Fermilab conducts its investigations by making these particles collide. Fermilab’s four-mile Tevatron, the world’s highest-energy particle accelerator, can reach an energy level of 0.980 trillion electron volts (TeV) for each of its particle beams: clockwise-circulating protons and anticlockwise-circulating antiprotons.! Coverage features dramatic color photography and extensive experimental reporting. This CD-ROM set has over 148,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software for Windows and Mac is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into Acrobat Reader, providing a complete full-text index. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable! Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc set makes a superb reference work and educational tool.

This is a privately compiled mass, or mess, of information from Fermilab by Michael A. Duvernois (Minneapolis, MN United States) 3 Stars

Fermilab is America's foremost foremost accelerator-based particle physics lab. It produces a lot of science results, press releases, and design documents. The authors of this set of CDs grabbed a bunch of that information, which is in the public domain, and stuck them on CDs. And hope that you'll buy them. There's a lot of great information on these disks, some of which is easily available online, but I can't imagine coming to these disks with no background on the experiments and getting much from the disks. If you're looking for an obscure Fermilab document, ask Fermilab's publications office for it, if you're looking for more basic information, it's probably on the web.

well suited for CD format by W Boudville (Terra, Sol 3) 4 Stars

This is what CDs and computers are well suited for. This set of CDs contains over 100 000 pages of publications by Fermilab. Explaining not just an overview of the lab, but many detailed publications. Having it on CDs means that you can quickly do searches for material. The technical nature of many files is highly specific to physics and engineering. There is a brief amount of high energy physics theory. But mostly it has to do with experimental setups. The price is also very reasonable, compared to that of many textbooks. Though note that the publishers did not have to pay for the writing of any of the material, which helped make this low price.
