CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 14 reviews)
| The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fibromyalgia, 2nd edition by K. Erickson (Fargo, ND) 2 Stars November 08, 2009 I did not learn anything from this book, pretty much all common sense. It was a waste of my time.
| | Easy to understand Fibromyalgia book by Debbie Johnson (Moran, KS USA) 5 Stars September 12, 2009 when I read the first book in this series I thought that this book could not get any better. It is so easy to understand, and a lot of information. But I was wrong, this 2nd edition is packed with even more easy to understand information with not a lot of medical terms that the lay non-medical person will understand. Keep these great books coming.
| | Fibromyalgia Can Be Improved, But You Don't Need Carbs To Do It! by Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Man (Spartanburg, SC) 2 Stars March 23, 2009 Millions of people are walking around with fibromyalgia and don't have a clue about how to deal with the complications that arise from this mysterious disease. But Lynn Matallana offers various ways people can cope with it by sharing what they can do and avoid doing to keep from exacerbating the problem. Not surprisingly, some of the best ways to handle fibromyalgia is taking care of your emotions, getting adequate sleep, eating and exercising right, reducing stress, don't sweat the small stuff, get support, and be pro-active about your condition.
On the subject of diet, I was curious to see what the authors would say about low-carb. And sure enough, they commented on the Atkins diet on page 221. They maintain that getting a good balance of carbs and protein will provide the right level of neurotransmitters in the brain, but to avoid eating too many carbohydrates lest your blood sugar gets knocked off kilter and leads to fatigue and moodiness. My wife Christine deals with fibromyalgia and it's not a pretty sight when she eats too many carbs. Overall, not a bad message, although I think the condition would be improved greatly by going full-fledged livin' la vida low-carb.
| | If you define yourself by your disease, get this book. If you want treatment options, look elsewhere by T2 (USA) 1 Stars January 11, 2009 This review is of the 2nd edition, which I selected because it was the most recently published (2009) overview book available. As anyone with FMS knows, the research and recommendations on this disease are changing rapidly.
Unfortunately, the bulk of this book was made up of things like "how to communicate with your family" and urges the reader to think of him/herself as a "fibromyalgia survivor". It has a more thorough discussion of alternative treatments than the actual research and scientific facts of fibromyalgia and almost no information about the latest pharmaceutical treatment options.
The "For Dummies" guide, although a couple years old, had more up-to-date and more comprehensive information on these topics.
| | Disappointing by homeschooling mom (Oregon) 3 Stars March 17, 2008 I've bought books on bipolar disorder that spent less time on my mental health then this book did. The NFA's stance has always been "antidepressants and lifestyle changes" and this book goes right along with it. Very little info on pharmacutical options. Very basic and very disappointing.
