| Informative...but not for everyone by Natalie Jones (chicago, IL) 3 Stars August 30, 2009 I recently had the pleasure of reading this book. I read this book from cover to cover. I agree with some of the past reviewers that this book had some insight. I have had thyroid disease for quite some time now, but I was already knowledgeable on the subject. I just read this book to see if I could find out anything new. While the book was a relatively easy read for me, I know that this book could be troublesome for the average reader who is not familiar with medical terminology, the endocrine system, biological mechanisms of the body, etc. The authors pride themselves on having a simplified book that everyone can read and understand. I would have to disagree with them there. Particularly with reference to the sections on the parathyroid and thyroid hormones they throw around a lot of jargon that can be very confusing to the average reader. Also in several instances, the authors give hormonal abbreviations without explaining what the hormones are first. Another big pet peeve of mine with this book was the order of it. The authors mention topics like hyper/hypothyroidism quite frequently in the first few chapters, but decide not to write about them until later in the book (Chapter 10, 11, etc.). The authors also make reference to lab tests, nuclear medicine, and radiological procedures; but do offer in depth explanations until much later in the text. They will write a few sentences about it, and say "we will discuss this more in depth later." I also found this book to be very repetitive. At least 50 pages of this book could have been eliminated from all the repetition. Also, the chapter on thyroid diet could have been eliminated altogether. In a nutshell all that chapter really says is to eat a proper diet and exercise. Who hasn't heard that by now? There was also a chapter that discussed finding a good doctor and suggested tips like find a doctor who will listen to you, and who will do what is best for you. I think that can be chalked up to having common sense. With that being said, there was some useful information in this book, such as the index of helpful websites in the back (which by the way could tell you everything that this book said and more for free). Overall, this book is an oversimplified text with jargon thrown in the middle of it, and helpful information here and there.

| | The BEST Thyroid book around by BB 5 Stars July 13, 2008 Having thyroid problems for over 16 years and having read every book ever published on thyroid disease, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. What I found was the thyroid reference book I've been searching for! Not only was it an easy read (finished it in one sitting), it was full of useful information from both a clinical doctor and reseach doctor's point of view (Dr. Friedman is both). This book is a must for anyone with thyroid problems, their friends and family to help in understanding this complex and debilitating health epidemic.
| | An Excellent Book! by Jerry Shustrin (Denver, Colorado) 5 Stars May 06, 2008 Dr. Friedman's thyroid disease health guide is comprehensive, very well written and most of all, easy to read. I personally have two other thyroid reference books and once I purchased his book, I've basically relegated the other two to the book case with Dr. Friedman's book residing on my desk. Kudos Dr. Friedman, you've succeeded in educating a person who needs more information and made him more comfortable and better aware just by reading your excellent book.
| | A remarkable and valuable book on a difficult topic by Waldo Lydecker (Calabasas, CA) 5 Stars April 13, 2008 This is a must read for persons with thyroid or other endocrine disorders. Dr. Friedman is a brilliant diagnostician and endocrinology researcher and has put together a book that reflects his immense learning and experience. This patient-friendly book on an extremely complicated and frustrating topic will be welcomed by sufferers of endocrine disorders. Dr. Friedman clearly lays out the nature and treatment of many endocrine disorders. This text will be of use to those many patients who must rely on general practitioners in indentifying and treating their endocrine disorders. Endocrine disorders are frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Despite the common reliance on blood work, there is still an art and feel to properly diagnosing and treating endocrine disorders that requires a high degree of physician/patient communication. This book will go a long way to enable patients to learn about their illness and to better enable them to communicate with their physicians.
