EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This important work elucidates why relapse is so common for people recovering from addictive behavior problems--and what can be done to keep treatment on track. It provides an empirically supported framework for helping people with addictive behavior problems develop the skills to maintain their treatment goals, even in high-risk situations, and deal effectively with setbacks that occur. The expert contributors clearly identify the obstacles that arise in treating specific problem behaviors, review the factors that may trigger relapse at different stages of recovery, and present procedures for teaching effective cognitive and behavioral coping strategies. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 4 reviews)
| eye opening by T. Michel (San Diego, CA) 5 Stars January 11, 2009 I disagree with the previous comment. I am a "layman" and my addiction counselor recommended this book to me as someone who isn't using a 12 step model of addiction recovery. Yes it has "big words", but it makes perfect sense to me, and what's amazing is that the bulk of the writing was done in the early 1980's. I recommend this book to anyone not interested in the disease model of addiction theory.
| | Empirical Study of Relapse by Dr. Dom Wilks (Jackson Hole, WY) 3 Stars March 28, 2008 Book is a good reference for literature review on relapse prevention.
Book offers little help in designing a relapse prevention program for patients.
| | A classic by A. Park (San Francisco) 5 Stars November 21, 2007 I am compelled to write this because there is only one review, and it misses the point. Marlatt is a pioneer in the field of addictions, and introduced science to the field of substance abuse treatment.
While it may be difficult for a layman to understand, it is a very important work for any professional in the field to have on their shelf.
| | Gobbledy-Gouke at its best by M. Findley (my own little world) 2 Stars March 20, 2006 While it does cover a range of addictions it is VERY techical and almost impossible for a layman to read. But, it does cover a lot and asses almost all addictions as well as eating disorders gambling and sexual crimes both seriously criminal and mildly criminal.
