| Not totally satisfied by Fiore Vitola (NJ) 3 Stars November 02, 2009 Although the author is quite knowledgeable on this subject of Heirloom tomatoes, I felt there were more illustration then information. I would have liked to seen more information on the growing and needs of each verity, also the particular zones that would be specific to those verities in this volume. Nice glossy photos with limited information.
| | Great Book for Tomato Lovers by Peter J. Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio) 5 Stars October 27, 2009 The Heirloom Tomato is a great book for tomato lovers be they a gardner or just someone who loves to eat these red teasures. Amy Goldman does an exceptional job covering what you would expect regarding the selection, planting and growing of these summer pleasures with an added surprise of providing you with some very good tomato tips for uses and recipies. It is a book you will enjoy leaving out to browse through the pictures, stories and tastes of what she calls the "worlds most beautiful fruit". You will enjoy it when the harvest season is past and your thinking about these summer pleaures of next season. Enjoy with a little salt and pepper on the side.
| | Great gift for a ventran tomato grower by Nancy S. Lane (PA) 5 Stars October 24, 2009 I was proud to give this book as a gift to an 83-year old gardener with years of experience growing vegetables and flowers from seed. Here is a man who knows his tomatoes, but his face glowed with appreciation to see this beautiful book filled with amazing photographs of tomatoes on the vine, on the table, in recipes, a tomato growers' delight.
Barnes and Noble did not have this book, it was only available through Amazon.com at a very good price.
I'm not a tomato grower to a great extent, but paged through the book to admire the photographs and text. A lovely book for the coffee table or nightstand.
| | Complete and interesting by Melanie Clark 5 Stars August 17, 2009 If you'd like to include Heirlooms in your garden, or just grow tomatoes in general, this is a great book. The photographs are beautiful and the descriptions are helpful in choosing the proper variety for your garden. Makes a great coffee table book too!
| | Love this book! by I. Forster (CT) 5 Stars July 25, 2009 I've been growing and saving seeds from heirloom tomatoes for years! I tend to get in a rut and grow what I know. I'm always on the lookout for new varieties but, with limited garden space, I have a hard time deciding which varieties to grow. This book solved that problem! I can sit and read this book for hours and find something new each time. I'll be growing the beautiful African Queen and Red Brandywine next year! This year it was German Pink!
All home gardeners know the difference between grocery store tomatoes and garden tomatoes, right? Well the difference between hybrid and heirloom tomatoes is the same yet again.
Other than the wonderful descriptions and beautiful pictures, the origin stories and the section on how to get the most out of your garden (and save seeds in a way to ensure self pollination) are all beautifully written and a rare treat.
LOVE THIS BOOK!
