EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description As the practical application of ecological restoration continues to grow, there is an increasing need to connect restoration practice to areas of underlying ecological theory. Foundations of Restoration Ecology is an important milestone in the field, bringing together leading ecologists to bridge the gap between theory and practice by translating elements of ecological theory and current research themes into a scientific framework for the field of restoration ecology. Each chapter addresses a particular area of ecological theory, covering traditional levels of biological hierarchy (such as population genetics, demography, community ecology) as well as topics of central relevance to the challenges of restoration ecology (such as species interactions, fine-scale heterogeneity, successional trajectories, invasive species ecology, ecophysiology). Several chapters focus on research tools (research design, statistical analysis, modeling), or place restoration ecology research in a larger context (large-scale ecological phenomena, macroecology, climate change and paleoecology, evolutionary ecology). The book makes a compelling case that a stronger connection between ecological theory and the science of restoration ecology will be mutually beneficial for both fields: restoration ecology benefits from a stronger grounding in basic theory, while ecological theory benefits from the unique opportunities for experimentation in a restoration context.Foundations of Restoration Ecology advances the science behind the practice of restoring ecosystems while exploring ways in which restoration ecology can inform basic ecological questions. It provides the first comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of restoration ecology, and is a must-have volume for anyone involved in restoration research, teaching, or practice. |

| Good reference text by NVA (Chicago, IL) 4 Stars September 29, 2008 I also bought this book as a required reading for a graduate class in restoration ecology. Prior to taking this class I had little background in restoration work; however, the book is very detailed and presents the material in a manner that is not difficult to understand (esp for someone who has little knowledge in restoration work--although you must have a good ecology base). Overall a good reference to have, especially if you are interested in this field.
| | Great Foundation by eferrarese (Oregon) 4 Stars April 28, 2007 This book was a required text for a graduate level course I took in Ecological Restoration. It provides a comprehensive overview of ecological theories that should be considered as a context for restoration design. The topics covered range in scale from landscape and population ecology to plant genetics. It is a valuable resource to all who are interested in ecological restoration.
| | A Comprehensive study for the serious minded. by dedreup (SE Michigan) 4 Stars February 15, 2007 The book is an extremely thorough look at the many aspects of Ecology Restoration, and compiles and summarizes the extensive research done to date in depth. The writing style demands reader concentration and compares well with academic texts. (not an easy read)

Restoration Ecology explores the interface between restoration ecology and ecological restoration. It aims at introducing Masters and PhD students, teachers, researchers and natural-resource managers to interactions between theory and practice. This book challenges ecologists to explore the applicability of current theories and concepts, recognizing that these have not been developed with such applications in mind. The academic foundations of restoration ecology are revisited for this...

| Linking Restoration and Ecological Succession (Springer Series on Environmental Management) by Lawrence R. Walker (Editor), Joe Walker (Editor), Richard J. Hobbs (Editor)
While studies of restoration and ecological succession have been published independently, there is much overlap between these approaches that has not been adequately explored. "Linking Restoration and Ecological Succession" integrates practical information from restoration projects around the world with the latest developments in successional theory. This innovative book recognizes the critical roles of disturbance ecology, landscape ecology, ecological assembly, invasion biology, ecosystem...
