This is NOT the true word of God- BEWARE!!! by D. Watson (CO, USA) 1 Stars
November 27, 2009
This is not the true word of God. I realize how seductive it is because people are so much more confortable with the contemporary versions these days, never mind the subtle undermining of the truth. This is a perversion and if you really want to know the TRUTH you will not get this version or the NIV or any of the other so called modern versions that are undermining the diety of Christ in subtle ways. The Niv is missing several texts all together!! And this so called Bible is coming out of and supports the Spiritual Formation and the Emergent Church movement that is infiltrating Christianity today. Satan knows the best way to bring God's people down is to work from the inside. So all these authors like Rick Warren, Thomas Merton, Leonard Sweet, Dallas Willard, Brian McLaren and others are pushing this agenda introducing contemplative prayer or centering prayer into Christianity. Friends, let me tell you, before I became a Christian, a Bible believing Christian, I was a "New Ager" (which isn't really new, it's right out of ancient Babylon, it's paganism, it's Satan's deception). It all sounds so nice, so wonderful but no where in the Bible are we taught to pray like this. Let me explain what this is...contemplative or centering prayer is where you get in a quiet room, you may light some candles, or incense, maybe have some pictures or idols that help you to focus on God...and you may do some slow and deep breathing trying to quiet the mind. Then you may pick a phrase like God is holy or whatever it may be and you repeat that phrase over and over for about 20 minutes. (Jesus says we are not to pray with vain repetition as the heathen do, and no where do you ever see this kind of prayer endorsed in a REAL Bible) This is right out of mysticism and there were Christian mystics but it is not of the true God. This is hypnotism, and when we empty our minds like this we leave ourselves open to Satan. God says: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (Matthew 22:37) We are to use our MIND, not empty it. We are not trying to get ourselves into an altered state when we are praying to God. The Message Bible is what this Spiritual Formation/Emergent Church movement endorses. This is a deception. Beware! This is feel good spiritualism, not Christianity. If you want to understand the full implications of what this deception really means and how it can lead you astray with eternal consequences, please go to [...] for resources. May God bless you in your sincere search to know Him in truth and spirit.

Most readable Bible by Western Reader (Colorado, USA) 5 Stars

"The Message" is the Bible of choice for our adult Bible study at church. Introduced to us by our pastor, many of us have found this a very readable Bible, clearly presented in contemporary language. Eugene Peterson's background lends credence to his interpretation from the original languages of the Bible. God's story and the story of God's people makes for intelligent discussion, active give-and-take posits and questions from those in our group, with the result that our faith has deepened. I strongly recommend this version to those who are new to the Bible, as well as those more experienced in their Bible reading/study. For example, the NRSV Bible presents Galatians 5:19-21a as: "Now the words of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these." The Message presents the same verses as: "It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex, a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage, frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness, trinket gods, magic-show religion, paranoid loneliness, cutthroat competition, all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants, a brutal temper, an impotence to love or be loved, divided homes and divided lives, small-minded and lopsided pursuits, the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival, uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions, ugly parodies of community. I could go on." Lest anyone think that Peterson's version is too radical or too extreme, here is another example. NRSV version of Acts 16:16-18: "One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, 'These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.' She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And it came out that very hour." The Message: "One day, on our way to the place of prayer, a slave girl ran into us. She was a psychic and with her fortunetelling, made a lot of money for the people who owned her. She started following Paul around, calling everyone's attention to us by yelling out, 'These men are working for the Most High God. They're laying out the road of salvation for you!' She did this for a number of days until Paul, finally fed up with her, turned and commanded the spiirit that possessed her, 'Out! In the name of Jesus Christ, get out of her!' And it was gone, just like that." A very-much-appreciated addition to this Bible is Peterson's introduction to the Bible itself, as well as introduction to each book therein. The book introductions include an overall view of the particular book, as well as a "To - From - Re" section which clarifies who wrote the book, to whom or to what people the writing was directed, and the approximate time/era focus of the book. These explanations in themselves help mightily in one's understanding and compehension. Reactions from members of our adult study group have ranged from "I never knew the Bible was such excellent reading," to "Wow...I couldn't put it down." (And as an aside, this group consists of long-time believers as well as those new to the faith.) Bottom line: This version takes an honored place alongside my collection of various versions of the Bible...and it's the one I read exclusively at this time. It's well worth the price and then some.

IMPOSSIBLE TO NAVIGATE by Sven (Los Angeles) 1 Stars

You can find your way to the first chapter of each book, but that's it! Can't navigate to chapters or verses except by paging through one page at a time. Unless you treat this as a novel and read from beginning to end it will be a nightmare. What a shame... my favorite translation, but wish I could get my money back!
