EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one of the most common reasons for a visit to the doctor in the United States, Europe, and other parts of the Western world. Even so, the majority of patients who have IBS do not seek medical care, which may be because of fear, embarrassment, or the lack of effective treatments. IBS affects both genders and all races. Recent data shows that 14 to 24 percent of women and 5 to 19 percent of men in the United States and Great Britain have IBS. If you have IBS, you are undoubtedly familiar with the link between your condition, your comfort, and what you eat or drink. Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should eat almost every day, and whether you suffer from IBS constipation, IBS diarrhea predominant, or the type of IBS that includes both conditions. Easy-to-use tables list what foods are good for diarrhea, and for constipation, and which foods cause bloating or gastrointestinal distress. This new edition of Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome contains an updated review of all the possible causes of IBS, including hormones and certain medications. It also includes nuggets of wisdom from Dr. Christine Frissora, MD, associate professor of gastroenterology at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Also included are practical tips such as "The 5 Quickest Ways to 25 Grams of Fiber;" dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes; and practical supermarket and "eating out" advice from someone who has suffered from IBS for more than 20 years--the author. |

| | Lifesaver!! Lifechanging!!! by Ultimate Jordan (New York) 5 Stars January 06, 2009 When no other doctor could figure out my IBS problems Dr. Christine Frissora was the genius who helped me overcome my IBS illness. For about 2 years I was battling GI issues that had me bed ridden for 2 months and out of work for 6 months. You can imagine my struggles throughout the year. To put it modestly, my life was taken away. 2 year prior I was extremely active playing every sport you can imagine 7 days a week. Then at age 26 I was hindered, handicapped and hampered by something over 50 doctors could not figure out. I am now 28. This book helped my way back to normalizing my digestive system. Within 2 weeks you will notice a difference. The right diet is crucial to healing your GI track. Many health professionals generalize on diet, but you truly need to be specific. This book helps differentiate for example fiber foods that would ease your digestive system. Buy this book and you won't regret it. IBS is a disease that is more life altering than heart disease, but because it is not immediately life threatening therefore IBS traditionally was not researched to its full potential. Dr. Frissora and her body of work helps to find new ways of coping with IBS symptoms.
| | Not enough information by Melinda S. Carpenter (Eastern NC USA) 1 Stars March 13, 2008 Not enough information. Very slim book, with little information. Basically, all of the information it contained I have found on websites.
| | NOT Consistent with the current research by Mike NoLomotil (Florida) 1 Stars April 24, 2007 Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.
| | Informative by Anna K. Josephson (Duluth, MN USA) 4 Stars January 08, 2007 This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.

| Healthy Cooking for IBS: 100 Delicious Recipes to Keep You Symptom Free by Sophie Braimbridge (Author)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a somewhat vague and all-encompassing term, but to the 35 million Americans who suffer from it, it means specific and sometimes debilitating symptoms. So varied are these symptoms, though, that in 2004 alone, 281 different treatments were administered to remedy them. But one constant in all of these treatments was a change in diet, and here, finally, is the first cookbook ever to address the dietary demands of this common and chronic ailment.
