Product Description
The latest volume of this perennially acclaimed annual maintains the well-established high standards of scholarship, research, news and reviews from the field of warship history. Combining original articles with comprehensive examinations of a vast array of classes from the world's major navies both past and present, "Warship" is an essential addition to the bookshelf of maritime enthusiasts, professionals, historians and modellers alike. "Warship 2009" will include major feature articles on the Royal Navy's postwar submarine strategy, the conversion of the IJN Ise and Hyuga to 'battleship-carriers', the building of HMS Repulse, the Soviet cruisers of the Kirov class, the loss of the French battleship Suffren, and the Italian MAS-boats.Other subjects of this title include the transition of the Victorian Navy from sail to steam, the turret ships Monarch and Captain, and weather losses during the Second World War. The annual will be completed by the customary 'World Navies in Review', 'Warship Notes', 'Gallery', and book review sections. It presents research from leading maritime authorities devoted to specialist subject areas. It is an another major contribution to naval scholarship. It features rare and unusual photographs, diagrams and line drawings. It maintains the high quality established by previous annuals in the series.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 1 review)

A very nice mix of articles for the naval enthusiast by Jim Davis (Maryland Heights, MO USA) 5 Stars
August 02, 2009
Warship 2009 is the 31st volume in a series of naval annuals that goes back to 1977. The first 12 volumes were collections of 4 quarterly journals; Warship 1989 began the present hardcover annual format. The 208 page volume is composed of 10 in depth articles, a notes section of shorter features, a navies in review describing naval developments of the past year, an "A & A" (additions and alterations) section with readers comments on previous articles, a section on book reviews, and a pictorial section. All that is not excellent is very good indeed. The outstanding features to my mind are the articles which are usually an eclectic mix. For example, this year we have articles on supplying coal to the Victorian Navy and the John Brown shipyard during WWI. The outstanding article this year, in my humble opinion, was the one on the explosion aboard the Japanese battleship Mutsu in 1943. One of the consistently outstanding features are the book reviews - 17 pages of 31 in depth reviews. Year after year I find books that I would never have heard of otherwise or books I wouldn't have been inclined to purchase otherwise. One of the features I could easily do without is "World Navies in Review 2008." It's fine for what it is but for my tastes it's out of place in a book that is largely historical in focus. Finally, there are eulogies to two recently deceased contributors, Daniel Harris and David K. Brown. Both will be missed.

French Battleships, 1922-1956
by John Jordan (Author), Robert Dumas (Author)

The French battleships of the Dunkerque and Richelieu classes were the most radical and influential battleship designs of the interwar period, and were coveted by the British, German and Italian navies following the Armistice of June 1940. Using a wealth of primary-source material, some of which has only recently been made available, the authors provide a full account of their development and a detailed analysis of their design characteristics. The technical chapters are interspersed with...

Struggle for the Middle Sea: The Great Navies at War in the Mediterranean Theater, 1940-1945

Struggle for the Middle Sea: The Great Navies at War in the Mediterranean Theater, 1940-1945
by Vincent P. O'Hara (Author)

The Mediterranean Sea was the most intensely contested body of water in World War II. As the maritime crossroads where Europe, Asia, and Africa meet, more major naval actions were fought in the Mediterranean than in the Atlantic or Pacific. Despite its importance, remarkably little has been written about the subject, and what exists is largely one-sided and outdated. This fresh study of the naval war in the Mediterranean analyzes the actions and performances of the five major navies British,...

Battle of Surigao Strait (Twentieth-Century Battles)

Battle of Surigao Strait (Twentieth-Century Battles)
by Anthony P. Tully (Author)

Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands was the scene of a major battleship duel during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because the battle was fought at night and had few survivors on the Japanese side, the events of that naval engagement have been passed down in garbled accounts. Anthony P. Tully pulls together all of the existing documentary material, including newly discovered accounts and a careful analysis of U.S. Navy action reports, to create a new and more detailed description of the...

The Last Century of Sea Power, Volume 1: From Port Arthur to Chanak, 1894--1922

The Last Century of Sea Power, Volume 1: From Port Arthur to Chanak, 1894--1922
by H. P. Willmott (Author)

The transition to modern war at sea began during the period of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and the Spanish-American War (1898) and was propelled forward rapidly by the advent of the dreadnought and the nearly continuous state of war that culminated in World War I. By 1922, most of the elements that would define sea power in the 20th century were in place. Written by one of our foremost military historians, this volume acknowledges the complex nature of this transformation, focusing on...
