Product Description
Astrobiology, the study of life and its existence in the universe, is now one of the hottest areas of both popular science and serious academic research, fusing biology, chemistry, astrophysics, and geology. In this masterful introduction, Lewis Dartnell explores its latest findings, and delves into some of the most fascinating questions in science. What actually is 'life'? Could it exist on other planets? Could alien cells be based on silicon rather than carbon, or need ammonia instead of water? Introducing some of the most extreme lifeforms on Earth - those thriving in boiling acid or huddled around deep-sea volcanoes - Dartnell takes us on a tour of the universe to reveal how deeply linked we are to our cosmic environment, and shows why the Earth is so uniquely suited for the development of life.

REview by Dr. Nick Badham (UK) 3 Stars
November 24, 2008
An excellent book covering a subject with which I am fairly familiar. I think that the sections on what goes on inside stars and stellar nebulae are too long given that they are essentially speculative. More space should have been given to the factual aspects of life on Earth as deduced from fossils and rocks. The almost conclusive evidence that there is or has been until recently life on Mars deserved mention too. Apart from these criticisms I found the book well written, comprehensive and likely to be enjoyed by the interestd amateur as well as the professional. Amazon's service was, as always, extremely efficient.

Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe

Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe
by Peter Ward (Author), Donald Brownlee (Author)

The sweeping diversity of complex life on Earth, Ward and Brownlee argue, evolved out of an extraordinary set of physical conditions and chance events that would be extremely hard to duplicate- though not impossible. Many planets throughout the vastness of the Universe may be teeming with microbial life, but advancement beyond this stage is very rare. Everyone with an interest in the possible extent of life in the Universe and the nature of life's evolution on our own planet will be fascinated...

Astrobiology: A Brief Introduction

Astrobiology: A Brief Introduction
by Kevin W. Plaxco (Author), Michael Gross (Author)

Astrobiology -- the study of the intimate relationship between life and the cosmos -- is a fast-growing field that touches on aspects of cosmology, astrophysics, and chemistry. In the first scholarly overview of this dynamic field, biochemists Kevin W. Plaxco and Michael Gross tell the story of life from the Big Bang to the present.

Emphasizing the biochemical nature of astrobiology, Plaxco and Gross examine the origin of the chemical elements, the events behind the developments that...

Cosmos

Cosmos
by Carl Sagan (Author)

The best-selling science book ever published in the English language, COSMOS is a magnificent overview of the past, present, and future of science. Brilliant and provocative, it traces today's knowledge and scientific methods to their historical roots, blending science and philosophy in a wholly energetic and irresistible way.

Ecology of Woodlands and Forests: Description, Dynamics and Diversity

Ecology of Woodlands and Forests: Description, Dynamics and Diversity
by Peter Thomas (Author), John Packham (Author)

Taking a functional rather than an ecosystem or a utilitarian approach, Thomas and Packham provide a concise account of the structure of woodlands and forests. Using examples from around the world - from polar treelines to savannahs to tropical rain forests - the authors explain the structure of the soil and the hidden world of the roots; how the main groups of organisms which live within them interact both positively and negatively. There is particular emphasis on woodland and forest...

Life Everywhere

Life Everywhere
by David Darling (Author)

To many people, the main question about extraterrestrial life is whether it exists. But to the scientific community, that question has already been answered: it does, and within our solar system. The new science of astrobiology is already being practiced at NASA's Astrobiology Institute and the University of Washington's new Department of Astrobiology.

Life Everywhere is the first book to lay out what the new science of astrobiology is all about. It asks the fascinating questions...
