Product Description
In the midst of a worldwide epidemic of autism, ADD, and ADHD, this book is a message of hope to parents embarking on the challenging journey of finding proper medical care for their Autism Spectrum Disorder children. Genetic susceptibility activated by "triggers" such as pesticides and heavy metals in vaccines can lead to immune system impairment, gut dysfunction, and pathogen invasion such as yeast and viruses in many children. This is the first book written by an experienced clinician that gives a step-by-step treatment guide for parents and doctors based on the understanding that ASD is a complex biomedical illness resulting in significant brain malnutrition. Dr. McCandless, whose grandchild with autism has inspired her "broad spectrum approach," describes important diagnostic tools needed to select appropriate treatment programs. Her book explains major therapies newly available and identifies safe and effective options for parents and physicians working together to improve the health of these special children.

Required reading for every doctor by John Connolly (Hot Springs village, AR USA) 5 Stars

An outstanding book on the effects of dairy products on the autistic person written by a doctor in laymans terms. The medical profession is quick to prescribe a variety of medications but seldom, if ever, discuss the dairy/gluten problems in the autistic spectrum. The suggestions in this book really work in the stabilization of the behavior of the autisic child. The doctor who wrote the book has an autistic grandchild and she speaks with first hand knowledge.

So far so good by Susan Maurer (USA) 4 Stars

I haven't finished reading this book yet, and so far I'm learning what I suspect will be good things regarding treating my daughter's recently diagnosed condition of Asperger's Syndrome. HOWEVER, I want to say that although this book bears a copyright date (updated - 4th edition) of 2009, some information is quite out of date and no longer valid. For example, on page 88 the author recommends "The Cheerful No Casein, No Gluten, Sugar Optional Cookbook" by Sally Ramsey - a professional chemist who is also a gourmet cook. That last bit was the hook that whet my appetite to purchase the book, but it is no longer available - and hasn't been for years - from the source the author lists: the Autism Research Institute. I did call the institute and am glad to have done so, but that book can't be found through them or anywhere else that I can find. Likewise, the author cites on page 87 that the Autism Network for Dietary Intervention (ANDI) publishes "The ANDI News," a quarterly newsletter with articles written by parents and health professionals regarding the GF/CF/SF diet. Not so. The newsletter stopped publishing in 2005 - four years before the 4th edition of this book! So even though I think this is a good book - it appears to be in great need of updating with accurate information. If these recommendations of the author's are any indication, it's possible that other information in this book is out-of-date as well and needs a more thorough combing through by the author and others to truly provide an updated version without false information!

Very helpful for adults with mercury poisoning too! by Squirrel (Philly) 4 Stars
May 30, 2009
This book was recommended to me by my doctor. I am mercury and lead toxic adult and have been trying to overcome the symptoms for years. The prodocol for getting the metals out and restoring ones health in this situation is very similar to what kids with autism go through. This book was very clearly written and helped me see the big picture. Obviously it's meant for those with autism but it really helped me. Also I have devoloped such a respect for children with autism and the parents of autistic kids. I highly recommend this book. What McCandless reveals about probable causes of autism is really fascinating. Her chapters on how to overcome this terrible affliction are easy to understand and inspire hope.

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery
by Karyn Seroussi (Author), Ph.D. Bernard Rimland (Foreword)

When their nineteen-month-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with autism, Karyn Seroussi, a writer, and her husband, a scientist, fought back with the only weapons at their disposal: love and research. Consulting medical papers, surfacing the Web, and networking with other parents, they traced the onset of their child's problems to an immune system breakdown that coincided with his vaccinations. As a result, his digestive system was unable to break down certain proteins, which in turn led to...
