EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description As the AIDS epidemic continues to explode around the world with uncontrolled spread antiretroviral therapy for HIV in the western world, where drugs are readily available, continues to improve. But significant long-term metoabolic and peripheral nerve toxicities have now emerged as complicating problems. Care of the HIV-infected patient is becoming increasingly complicated and today most patients are managed by teams of health care providers that focus on HIV/AIDS. This approach has been highly successful, with a marked reduction in mortality rate and diminished progression to symptomatic AIDS. The major challenge now facing clinicians is stimulating their patients to adhere to complex therapeutic regimens while managing their complicated toxicities, similar to management of other chronic diseases. As the complexities of care increase, it becomes increasingly difficult to develop simple functional guidelines. In this Sanford Guide, we present a wealth of emerging information, with appropriate references where possible, while trying to give rational guidelines for care. We have expanded our scope to include more information relavant to AIDS in the 3rd World. Since the field is rapidly changing, we try to anticipate emerging trends but realize that many of our suggestions may be superseded by new information. |
