EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description More of an adventure story than an encyclopedia, this resource for Crohn’s and colitis patients weaves humor with introspection and information with observation. Written by a sufferer of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the guide shares common tales and insights while also covering symptoms, medications, and procedures, from a uniquely entertaining viewpoint. Humor and frankness are used as a coping method, helping to illustrate and conquer common difficulties brought on by the chronic illness. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 7 reviews)
| Insight into life with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by Jim (Portland, OR United States) 5 Stars November 07, 2009 I read this based on the recommendation of a friend who has Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It's both humorous and educational -- gave me a first person view of what he's going through. I recommend it for anyone suffering with this condition. I recommend it for anyone who knows someone who does, in order to gain a better understanding of what they're going through.
| | Funny and Insightful by Kristin Swenson (Virginia USA) 5 Stars September 09, 2009 A hilarious look at a less-than-funny condition. Tubesing does a wonderful job of providing a light, laugh-out-loud narrative of dealing with a serious, often embarrassing health challenge. Filled with wonderful insights about family, life, and longtime love, it's a great read, even for those of us lucky enough to have dodged such a diagnosis.
| | Wonderfully insightful and a must for health-care providers by Amy Harrison (Albuquerque, NM) 5 Stars September 07, 2009 This is one of those rare texts written by someone who can relate to both health care providers and laypeople alike. The humor keeps it light while the insights into what it's like to suffer from ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease are illuminating for those who care for and live with people with these conditions. Tubesing doesn't gloss over the details of the day-to-day existence of people like himself, but neither does he dwell on his disease as though it's his one defining characteristic. I think in particular that medical residents, especially those going into gastrointestinal specialties, would benefit greatly from reading this text, and because it's highly accessible to anyone, I would recommend it for family members of people with inflammatory bowel disease conditions.
| | Brave and Enlightening by S. M. Otto (San Jose, CA) 5 Stars September 02, 2009 Funny, forthright, and informative, this book opened my eyes and awakened my compassion for those suffering from Crohn's and colitis.
In the course of sharing these essays with others, I've learned that several people in my life live with either chronic bowel disease or digestive complications related to some other ailment. Were it not for Colitiscope, the topic would have never been raised, and that entire dimension of their lives would have remained unknown to me. With the subject broached--and with the knowledge gained from reading this book--I can now be a more understanding and effective friend.
In the end, these essays transcend Crohn's and colitis and offer a window into the challenges of living with any number of quiet afflictions. You walk away from the book more open, more inquisitive, and more equipped to understand one another.
It's a brave thing the author has done, publicly bringing attention to this subject, and I applaud him.
| | Insightful by Merrill Kempfert (Tucson, AZ) 5 Stars September 02, 2009 "Colitiscope" straddles the delicate line of balance between offering a detailed description of common signs and symptoms of bowel disease (no laughing matter) with a range of thought-provoking, often humorous, stories shared from an insider's perspective (a laughing matter). The author accomplishes the art of de-sensitization ----- tackling a taboo topic while utilizing the prism of humor. This book offers a series of stories from the author's own history which, hopefully, many individuals with bowel disease can identify with yet in a format that allows family and friends to better understand, empathize and respond to those with this hidden illness. Five stars for content, readibility and educational insight.
