EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This book is a comprehensive treatment of star formation, one of the most active fields of modern astronomy. The reader is guided through the subject in a logically compelling manner. Starting from a general description of stars and interstellar clouds, the authors delineate the earliest phases of stellar evolution. They discuss formation activity not only in the Milky Way, but also in other galaxies, both now and in the remote past. Theory and observation are thoroughly integrated, with the aid of numerous figures and images. In summary, this volume is an invaluable resource, both as a text for physics and astronomy graduate students, and as a reference for professional scientists. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 1 review)
| Lots of information by P. H Kohlmiller (San Jose, CA USA) 5 Stars November 27, 2007 This book goes into the details of star formation. And I do mean "details". This is probably geared toward graduate students in astronomy. For example, the details on how masers are created near newly formed stars is unlikely to get more than a sentence in an intro astro text.
If you are really committed, you may read this from cover to cover. But I find myself curious about some part of stellar evolution and it's easy to find where to jump in and read 3 or 4 chapters. If you need even more information, the references are excellent.
My copy had some printing problems which caused a lot of pages to be stuck together. I bet that was a rare occurrence.
So the 5 stars in this review is for those who really want to know the details, others might need to look elsewhere.
