Product Description
This book forms an introduction to important aspects of shock-wave propagation in solid materials. Emphasis is on the regime of moderate compression that can be produced by high-velocity impact or detonation of chemical explosives. In this regime relatively simple equations of state are applicable to the description of compression. Solids may also experience inelastic flow, in which elastic–plastic deformation becomes important. The theory provided is that required to conduct research in the field and to pursue its applications to ordnance development, Earth and planetary sciences, materials research, and other matters. The book includes a careful account of the kinematical and dynamical equations of the subject along with constitutive equations that describe the distinguishing responses of compressible fluids, elastic solids, and elastic–plastic and elastic–viscoplastic solids. The discussion of wave propagation begins with elementary analyses of important problems of the propagation and interaction of plane longitudinal shocks. This is followed by more refined analyses of problems of plane-wave propagation in the aforementioned materials. Finally, spall fracture, wave propagation in porous solids, and detonation phenomena are discussed. Many illustrative problems can be solved without recourse to extensive numerical analysis. The text includes numerous exercises and detailed solutions to these exercises.

The Detonation Phenomenon

The Detonation Phenomenon
by John H. S. Lee (Author)

This book introduces the detonation phenomenon in explosives. It is ideal for engineers and graduate students with a background in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. The material is mostly qualitative, aiming to illustrate the physical aspects of the phenomenon. Classical idealized theories of detonation waves are presented first. These permit detonation speed, gas properties ahead and behind the detonation wave, and the distribution of fluid properties within the detonation wave itself to be...

Physics of Shock Waves and High-Temperature Hydrodynamic Phenomena

Physics of Shock Waves and High-Temperature Hydrodynamic Phenomena
by Ya. B. Zeldovich (Author), Yu. P. Raizer (Author)

The physical and chemical processes occurring in gases at high temperatures are the focus of this outstanding text by two distinguished physicists. They discuss essential physical influences on the dynamics and thermodynamics of continuous media, combining material from such disciplines as gas dynamics, shock-wave theory, thermodynamics and statistical physics, molecular physics, spectroscopy, radiation theory, astrophysics, solid-state physics, and other fields. Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library, Vol. 3: Solids II
by Y. Horie (Editor)

This book is the second of several volumes on solids in the Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library. These volumes are primarily concerned with high-pressure shock waves in solid media, including detonation and high-velocity impact and penetration events.

Of the four extensive chapters in this volume, the first two describe the reactive behavior of condensed phase explosives,
