EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Chronic venous insufficiency is a widespread disease of great socioeconomic relevance. It is characterized by accompanying venous hypertension due to valvular dysfunction orvalvular insufficiency. Analysis of the tissue surrounding venous ulcers has demonstrated intra- and perivascular accumulation of leukocytes, probably activated by tissue hypoxia. These microcirculatory phenomena have attracted the interest of researchers in the field of basic and clinical microcirculation. The papers in this text are taken from the 15th Bodensee Symposium on Microcirculation, and aim to bring together a panel of specialists from the basic physiologic and clinical sciences in order to discuss the available data related to microcirculation and chronic venous insufficiency. The presentations include microvascular physiology and capillary exchange in normal and inflamed microvessels, dynamics of the microlymphatic system, platelet/leukocyte endothelial cell interaction and tissue and lymph edema and their conservative or surgical treatment. The contributions aim to illustrate understanding of the microcirculation in chronic venous insufficiency and clarify progress in the field. |
