The surgical procedure of lung transplantation is an individual event lasting several hours. However, lung transplantation may also be considered as a (complex) process in which various “stages” or phases have to be passed through. From this point of view, lung transplants could be said to take several months as a minimum. This book attempts to describe lung transplantation as an “out of the ordinary” period in life. It is aimed primarily at people affected by this situation: at people waiting for a transplant who want to think carefully about what might be going to happen to them, or at people who have already had a transplant and want to compare their experiences with those of others who have undergone the same thing; also at relatives and friends of those affected who are wondering what might be involved in the decision to have a transplant and in what respect their support might be required. It goes without saying, however, that the book is also written for interested laypeople and professionals alike. For the latter, there are references in the footnotes at various points to the literature used or dealing with a topic in greater depth. This book describes the experience of 45 young adults who received their transplant in Germany, on average five years ago. Whilst some of the issues mentioned here may be applicable only to a German situation and some relate to a time already long past, the key issues still remain valid all over the world and do not change with time – confrontation with existential imponderability, uncertainty about whether the transplant will even happen at all and what life will really be like afterwards, to name but a few. It is our hope that whoever reads this book will benefit from the experience in one way or another. |

This book introduces the reader into the world of transplantation through the eyes of the patient. The different stages patients have to go through are described and illustrated by excellent quotes: decision making, communication, waiting, etc. Emotions and cognitions such as anticipation, excitement, fear and doubt in relation to the different stages patients go through are well described. This book may be used by professionals who are starting in the field of transplantation and want to learn about patients experiences. It is also excellent reading for patients of families dealing with transplantation themselves. Well written, clear, concise, emotional and above all with integrity.
