EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This book is intended as an introduction to classical water wave theory for the college senior or first year graduate student. The material is self-contained; almost all mathematical and engineering concepts are presented or derived in the text, thus making the book accessible to practicing engineers as well. The book commences with a review of fluid mechanics and basic vector concepts. The formulation and solution of the governing boundary value problem for small amplitude waves are developed and the kinematic and pressure fields for short and long waves are explored. The transformation of waves due to variations in depth and their interactions with structures are derived. Wavemaker theories and the statistics of ocean waves are reviewed. The application of the water particle motions and pressure fields are applied to the calculation of wave forces on small and large objects. Extension of the linear theory results to several nonlinear wave properties is presented. Each chapter concludes with a set of homework problems exercising and sometimes extending the material presented in the chapter. An appendix provides a description of nine experiments which can be performed, with little additional equipment, in most wave tank facilities. |

| nothing better I needed! by Mir Emad Mousavi (TX, USA) 5 Stars August 31, 2008 I think it was the book that I needed and I received it very soon and it was OK from any point of view for me!
| | Good accessible book on water wave mechanics by calvinnme (Fredericksburg, Va) 4 Stars April 04, 2006 The objectives of this book are to introduce the reader to the fundamental understanding of water wave theory and to apply the basic physical principles to the coastal and ocean environments. The prerequisites for understanding this book are knowledge of fluid mechanics, basic calculus, and differential equations. Thus it is presumed that the student is an engineer, and probably an ocean engineer. This book is really quite accessible. I am an electrical engineer and I have been using it to help perform animations and visual effects regarding water and its properties. Its clear examples have been quite valuable in turning seemingly complex equations into actual physical phenomena that can be measured. I consider it a steal at its low price considering its content. Also, it is good as a textbook since it contains plenty of homework problems at the end of each chapter.
The table of contents are:
Introduction to Wave Mechanics
A Review of Hydrodynamics and Vector Analysis (Eulerian and Lagrangian view, Navier-Stokes Equation)
Small-Amplitude Water Wave Theory Formulation and Solution

| Sea Loads on Ships and Offshore Structures (Cambridge Ocean Technology Series) by O. Faltinsen (Author)
The book introduces the theory of the structural loading on ships and offshore structures caused by wind, waves and currents, and goes on to describe the applications of this theory in terms of real structures. The main topics described are linear-wave induced motions, loads on floating structures, numerical methods for ascertaining wave induced motions and loads, viscous wave loads and damping, stationkeeping and water impact and entry. The applications of the theoretical principles are...

| Marine Hydrodynamics by J. N. Newman (Author)
Marine Hydrodynamics was specifically designed to meet the need for an ocean hydrodynamics text that is up-to-date in terms of both content and approach. The book is solidly based on fundamentals, but it also guides the student to an understanding of their engineering applications through its consideration of realistic configurations. Such texts have proved valuable in aerodynamics courses, but in hydrodynamics a wide gap has existed between basic texts on fluid mechanics and the engineering...

| Fluid Mechanics, Fourth Edition by Ira M. Cohen (Author), Pijush K. Kundu (Author)
Fluid mechanics, the study of how fluids behave and interact under various forces and in various applied situations-whether in the liquid or gaseous state or both-is introduced and comprehensively covered in this widely adopted text. Fully revised and updated with the addition of a new chapter on biofluid mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Fourth Edition is suitable for both a first or second course in fluid mechanics at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. The leading advanced general text...

| Coastal Processes with Engineering Applications by Robert G. Dean (Author), Robert A. Dalrymple (Author)
The world's coastlines, dividing land from sea, are geological environments that are unique in their composition and the physical processes affecting them. At the dynamically active intersection of land and the oceans, humans have been building structures throughout history. Initially used for naval and commercial purposes, more recently recreation and tourism have increased activity in the coastal zone dramatically. Shoreline development is now causing a significant conflict with natural...
