Product Description
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) is one of the most fascinating and beautiful phenomena in all branches of physics. Tremendous theoretical and experimental developments are still being made in this sphere. In the original edition of this book, composite bosons, composite fermions and fractional charged excitations (anyons) were among the distinguished ideas presented. This new edition includes many novel ideas according to recent progress. Fantastic phenomena associated with the interlayer phase coherence and SU(4) quantum Hall ferromagnets in the bilayer system are extensively reviewed. The microscopic theory of the QHE is formulated based on noncommutative geometry, the underlying mathematical structure. Quasiparticles are described as noncommutative solitons. The coverage also includes the recent development of the unconventional QHE in graphene (a single atomic layer graphite), where the electron dynamics can be treated as relativistic Dirac fermions and even the supersymmetric quantum mechanics plays a key role. An instructive and comprehensive overview of the QHE, this book is also suitable as an introduction to quantum field theory with vivid applications. Only a knowledge of quantum mechanics is assumed. Contents: Quantum Field Theory: Canonical Quantization, Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking; Electromagnetic Field; Dirac Field; Topological Solitons; Anyons; Monolayer Quantum Hall Systems: Landau Quantization; Quasiparticles and Activation Energy; Composite Bosons and Semiclassical Analysis; Quantum Hall Ferromagnets; Spin Textures; Hierarchy of Fractional QH States; Edge Effects; Quantum Hall Effects in Graphene; Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems: SU(2) Pseudospin Structure; Interlayer Coherence; SU(4) Qunatum Hall Ferromagnets; Bilayer Quantum-Hall Junction; Microscopic Theory: Noncommutative Geometry; Landau Level Projection; Noncommutative Solitons; Exchange Interactions and Effective Theory; and other papers.

Quantum Physics in One Dimension (International Series of Monographs on Physics)

Quantum Physics in One Dimension (International Series of Monographs on Physics)
by Thierry Giamarchi (Author)

This book is a pedagogical yet complete introduction to the physics of the one dimension. Recent progress in nanotechnology and material research have made one dimensional systems a crucial part of today's physics. After an introduction to the basic concepts of correlated systems, the book gives a step by step description of the techniques needed to treat one dimension, and discusses the resulting physics. The specific experimental realization of one dimensional systems such as spin chains,...

Symmetries, Lie Algebras and Representations: A Graduate Course for Physicists (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)

Symmetries, Lie Algebras and Representations: A Graduate Course for Physicists (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)
by Jürgen Fuchs (Author), Christoph Schweigert (Author)

This is an introduction to Lie algebras and their applications in physics. First illustrating how Lie algebras arise naturally from symmetries of physical systems, the book then gives a detailed introduction to Lie algebras and their representations, covering the Cartan-Weyl basis, simple and affine Lie algebras, real forms and Lie groups, the Weyl group, automorphisms, loop algebras and highest weight representations. The book also discusses specific further topics, such as Verma modules,...

Composite Fermions

Composite Fermions
by Jainendra Jain (Author)

When electrons are confined to two dimensions, cooled to near absolute zero temperature, and subjected to a strong magnetic field, they form an exotic new collective state of matter. Investigations into this began with the observations of integral and fractional quantum Hall effects, which are among the most important discoveries in condensed matter physics. The fractional quantum Hall effect and a stream of other unexpected findings are explained by a new class of particles: composite...

Classical Electrodynamics Third Edition

Classical Electrodynamics Third Edition
by John David Jackson (Author)

A revision of the defining book covering the physics and classical mathematics necessary to understand electromagnetic fields in materials and at surfaces and interfaces. The third edition has been revised to address the changes in emphasis and applications that have occurred in the past twenty years.

Quantum Field Theory of Many-body Systems: From the Origin of Sound to an Origin of Light and Electrons (Oxford Graduate Texts)

Quantum Field Theory of Many-body Systems: From the Origin of Sound to an Origin of Light and Electrons (Oxford Graduate Texts)
by Xiao-Gang Wen (Author)

For most of the last century, condensed matter physics has been dominated by band theory and Landau's symmetry breaking theory. In the last twenty years, however, there has been the emergence of a new paradigm associated with fractionalization, topological order, emergent gauge bosons and fermions, and string condensation. These new physical concepts are so fundamental that they may even influence our understanding of the origin of light and electrons in the universe. This book is a pedagogical...
