Neuroprotective agents under investigation block the glutamate cascade, inhibit calcium flux, antagonize opioid receptors, or block nitric oxide formation or free radical activity. Thrombolytics, such as streptokinase, urokinase, and tissue plasminogen activator, can dissolve cerebral blood clots, but raise the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage.Citation DetailsTitle: Neuroprotective and thrombolytic agents: advances in stroke treatment.Author: Nanette HockPublication: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (Refereed)Date: June 1, 1998Publisher: American Association of Neuroscience NursesVolume: v30 Issue: n3 Page: p175(10)Distributed by Thomson Gale
