| Banal Observations By a Nobel Prize Winner by Michael A. Faraone 1 Stars December 31, 2008 I read the entire book, for which I am bitter. So many great books out there to read, and I spent too many lost hours on this one. Every 5 to 10 pages Saramago delivers a mind-numbing banal 'observation,' on everything from how a clock only goes from 1 to 12 and does not 'know' the difference between am and pm, all the way to how men can pee without making noise. It was ridiculous. And it was poorly written at places, to a surprising degree. And I don't mean the run-on paragraphs, absence of quotation marks, etc., stylistic ploys Saramago uses to try to disorient the reader. I thought those things failed, but I understand the intent. Maybe a problem occured in the translation process. I don't know. I don't think that can explain it. I might give another one of his books a try, but nearly every review I read of this one was glowing. So, it has to be me and/or my taste in things. I found it boring and ultimately devoid of any payoff - no insight into anything, not as far as I can see.
