There is much that is still not understood about statins, and it is increasingly apparent that they have a dark side.
The major adverse effect of statins is muscle weakness and degradation, called myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, which can range from mild to severe.
Understand that among low risk patients, the benefit-to-risk ratio associated with statin use is also lower. Indeed, in low-risk people, it is possible that statin-induced adverse effects may exceed the potential benefits. This is especially pertinent when we consider that, once an individual has begun to use them, statins are likely to be used for many years, Statins may have other adverse effects that are less common than myopathy, ranging from macular degeneration (central vision loss), to acute pancreatitis, worsening of diabetes mellitus, and drug-induced pneumonia. Statins, especially simvastatin, can induce a lupus-like syndrome. Cases of drug-induced polio due to cholesterol-lowering drugs have also been reported.
