A Solid Primer for Someone New to Diabetes by nessie (SF Bay area) 4 Stars

Just a quick comment since so many others have commented in detail. My mother recently received a diagnosis of Type-2 diabetes; therefore, my knowledge is limited but growing daily. This book presents a broad range of sound, helpful information in a clear, easy to understand format. It also has portions which cause me concern (based on healthy nutrition in general), like recommending you skip dinner altogether and, instead, get all your calories at breakfast and lunch. Also, please note, if you buy the book thinking you might want to visit the Lifestyle Center of America for their on-site diabetes program, they no longer offer it. As of January 1, 2010, they have a new book and program called The Full Plate Diet ([...].) They do still offer support information to readers of the book at the site diabetes miracle.org where the password to access further information is "miracle".([...]). The site is worth checking out for detailed imformation on a number of diabetes-related topics and a sample journal. I could find no mention anywhere on the site about how long they will continue to offer this website. Best of luck to all you seekers of health.

30-Day Diabetes Miracle by M. Ackley 5 Stars

As a Health and Wellness Coach I found this book to be a great encouragement for those with diabetes themselves or in the family. The information is well written and documented. The recipes are excellent tasting and well balanced. I highly recommend this book to those without diabetes as the principles apply to other chronic diseases as well as those without overt disease. Nothing I didn't already know by J. Goldfaden (Long Island) 2 Stars

I ordered this book with a lot of hope. What I found was very general information that could be found anywhere. Being a vegetarian, there were no surprises...but what really bothered me was that there were no recommendations for allowable amounts...the key to bringing your diabetes under control is the right amount of calories, carbs, fat and protein all within the day...this book did not even suggest how to do this. I did plenty of reading on the internet..looking up glycemic index, diabetes food allowances and created a list of yes and no food...I kept track of the number of carb PORTIONS per day(15 carbs = a portion) the number of fat portions per day (5 grams = a portion of which 2-3 servings are tops) and it is always good to have some protein with meals...Diabetics don't often realize that fat is as bad for you as sugar...and, this book strongly recommends beans which can, for many diabetics, raise your sugar...so I would suggest that you do lots of reading, make sure that you put together a diet that will work, long term, for you..with foods you will enjoy. It is truly possible to turn your diabetes around...to get your numbers under control and enjoy eating...this book disappointed me...

Good information, but nothing new by Mark Walker (Cincinnati, Ohio United States) 3 Stars
October 30, 2009
This book is useful for people that don't know much about diabetes, but is mainly the "diet and exercise" program that most diabetics already know about. They do not address the topic of nutritional supplements and vitamins/minerals that are useful in controlling blood sugar levels. There is some useful information, guidelines and recipes, but a lot of this is common sense or common knowledge.
