EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description In recent years, mainstream Americans have begun to come around to meditation in a big way-and scientific studies are suggesting that the physical and mental benefits are solid and real. But to many, it remains something mystical and inaccessible...and spiritually-oriented tomes on the market don't do much to make it easier. As interest in meditation continues to grow, this book offers a simple, no-nonsense program to help beginners experience reduced stress and increased focus in only eight minutes a day. Designed by meditation expert and bestselling author Victor Davich, this program teaches the basic principles of meditation while clearing up the misconceptions and myths that too often get in the way. |

| Perfect for beginners by Jason (Springfield Vermont) 5 Stars October 11, 2009 I bought this book because I was looking at meditation for dummies to take my meditation practice to another level and found a review that suggested this book was better. I've meditated on and off for a couple years on my own and always wanted to take it to another level but never did. I don't regret buying this book for a second. 8 minute meditation is an 8 week program that changes your meditation technique from week to week, each week bringing you deeper into the meditation. I believe at the end you choose one of the techniques to continue depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Currently I just started on week 5 and have noticed improved concentration and a calmer mind; however I will say that I do 8 minutes twice a day rather than the once a day the book tries to mandate - this is ONLY because I have been doing meditation for a couple years - a beginner should stick to the 8 minutes once a day mandate in the book.
There is a stigma about the word meditation - that it somehow implies religion must be attached to it. There is no religion in this book which is perfect for me. I wish we had another word than meditation so that people would realize it can have nothing to do with religion if one chooses. It is simply the act of training you're mind to "allow what is" as this book defines meditation and teaches you how to do. This allows you to surpass your thoughts that have nothing to do with the moment which amazingly improves your concentration.
I'm sorry to say that I can't say weather meditation for dummies is better or not as I've had that book for 4 weeks and haven't read more that a couple pages of it.
| | cant get into it by Jessica Farrington (North Bergen, NJ United States) 2 Stars September 04, 2009 Not crazy about the author. Very boring and hard to get into. He repeats not to skip parts, but i couldnt help it. Aside from that, it hasnt interested me enough to get far into the book. Ive had it for months. Not my kind of meditation book.
| | A must for beginners by Wombat whiskers (Melbourne Australia) 5 Stars August 16, 2009 Before reading this book my experience with meditation was limited to 5 minutes at the end of yoga classes, a few mediations from Matthieu Ricard's book "Happiness", and a failed attempt some years ago to meditate for 30 minutes a day. I was inspired to take it a bit further after reading "Happiness". Following the instructions in "8 Minute Meditation" I was able to achieve that blissful state of stillness and peace that people who mediate talk about. Until you have experienced it for yourself it is hard to describe.
The book takes you through various types or stages of meditation. Each week for 8 weeks you do a slightly different meditation skill. This includes breathing, sound, body sensations, being in the moment, gracious declining, loving kindness, and finally combining them all.
The emphasis on practice being important rather than outcome, and the small daily committment required (8 minutes) made it really achievable for me. My biggest problem was that having achieved a state of bliss I was reluctant to move onto the next lesson. Also, although I only committed to 8 minutes I frequently found myself doing much longer sessions.
Unfortunately, somewhere along the way I stopped doing it. I've just fished the book out of my colection and decided to start again.
| | 8 minute meditation, 8 hour read by Tim (San Juan, PR) 4 Stars June 21, 2009 This is the first book on meditation I have read, so I can't really give a comparison to others, but I can say what I thought of this one. Up until now I had always thought meditation was a method to "tune everything out", so I found the concept of "allowing everything in" to be fascinating. That alone changed my outlook in life, and I thank the author for that. Although I still haven't found a way to peacefully "allow" some of the insane idiocracy going on around me which causes me great inconvenience. On the downside of the book; the title implies it is a quick way to successful meditation, however the entire book is full of extra fluff, repetition, and silly question/answer sessions that to me only got in the way of the real material. If the author streamlined the text to just what really needs to be said, it would easily go from 200 pages to 100. By the way I am exaggerating the "8 hour read", but it did take quite a bit of patience to wade through the superfluous text, get the Cliff notes on this one :)
| | Great Place to Start Mediation by S. Goldsmith 5 Stars June 10, 2009 Over the past year I began having anxiety, leading to panic disorder. With the help of 8 Minute Meditation, I've been able to improve my patience, reduce negative thoughts, and achieve a more peaceful state. This is great book for those beginning, or returning to, meditation. The key is that it is practical: How many of us can start meditating for 30 minutes or more every day? By starting small, the art of meditation was far less intimidating for me. I finished the eight-week program two months ago, and my mediation practice is feeling better, and getting longer, each day.
