| Pay now or pay much more later by Jeffrey F. Stuckey (Douglasville, Georgia United States) 5 Stars November 12, 2009 This is a fantastic device that any small business owner or home owner should install in conjunction with a good UPS. Even if your UPS says it has power conditioning get this. It will do a much better job and the part that actually bleeds off spikes in power will last longer. The ones in your typical store bought, or even nice UPS, units will wear out in a year or so depending on your situation and you will never know that your device is getting constant fluctuations. This is what kills and or causes people to replace electronics all the time. They almost always think they have bad electronics when in fact they just have bad maintenance habits caused by simple ignorance of the problems you must address in regards to your home/business power supply. If you have power that fluctuates in your environs you are literally cutting the life of your computers, televisions and more in half or worse. With computers many of the problems you see in regards to slowing down and constant little hardware failures (Hard Drives being a big one) are caused by this. Buy one of these and a good UPS for your new big screen and you will have it for 8 years instead of 4 before it needs replacing. That kind of savings right there would buy you enough of these to protect all your electronics.
However there seem to be some who do not understand what this is and think it will also apply power to your line.. It will not provide your device with additional power when a device peals off a large spike in current. It will just protect the device from the harm that can be caused by the irregular voltage that happens with such an occurrence. When you see that pull that lowers the power through out your home you may not notice the large spike and extreme lows and spikes that occur through out the event. This protects you from that. If you want to insure compensating power is provided you need to add a UPS as well. Hope this helps....Keep this device because it will save your electronics since you obviously need to increase the capacity of the feed and wiring in your home. I just moved into an old home last year that had the most cobbled together electrical system I had ever seen. I was told that is pretty normal in the old days. I have a huge number of very valuable electronics so I paid $8,000 to have new mains brought to the house and isolated new circuits through out the house where ever electronics would go. Even then I had brown outs when my A/C cut on. I had a house surge protector installed at the circuit box, a special power compensation unit added to the A/C and have put these devices and APC 1500 UPS's through out the house to guarantee smooth power no matter the problem. It may seem extreme but compared to replacing equipment or God forbid making a claim that would cost me several times that improvement cost in increased premiums. Pay the money and do it right or regret it later.
This is one of those situation where it is not a matter of "If". It is a matter of "It is happening right now as you read this review". Buy it now. It is cheaper than a night at the movies for the family.

| | Does not perform as advertised by K. Tam 1 Stars July 24, 2009 I bought TWO of these about 2 years ago, and as someone pointed out, the way it conditions the line does not make sense. I want to preface this review by saying that my technical knowledge is high.
First, let me assure you that I've tested the voltage at my lines with a multimeter, and without this unit, it reads approximately 120-122V during normal operation. I plugged in this unit, and the green light indicating 120V was on, meaning all was well. Now, RANDOMLY, I've noticed that the light goes from green to the up arrows to indicate an overvoltage. Sometimes it goes to the down arrow to indicate an undervoltage. Regardless of which arrow it is currently on, I have taken my multimeter directly to the outlet and have tested the voltage again, and it always still read 120-122V. I then took the multimeter and plugged it into the APC unit, and have noticed that it is IMPROPERLY correcting the voltage!
For example, when the APC indicated the line voltage was too high, it was correcting it to about 110V. When it indicated the voltage was too low, it was corrected it to about 125V! This is NOT right.
There is also a 3 way switch on the back of the unit to indicate what the nominal line voltage should be. Either 110V, 120V, or 127V. I always have this set to 120V like it should be for NYC. I have tried toggling the switch to different settings, and even the switch does not behave as it should! For example, if the unit is indicating that the voltage is too high (up arrow) and I push the switch to 127V, the up arrow goes back to green. When I test the voltage at the wall, it says it's 120-122V and when I test it at the unit, it now reads 120V even though the switch is on 127V! If I now push the switch back to the 120V setting, the light STAYS green, and voltages are 120V all the way around!
This sort of erratic behavior is NOT normal. And before anyone says that I have defective units, let me first say that I have two of these units, and their behavior is identical. In fact, I have plugged both of these units into the same wall outlet before and I have had ONE of them indicate high voltage, and the other indicate normal voltage! And both of these units are NOT defective because I had them both sent back to APC and both of them replaced. The replacement units worked the same way as the old ones and had exactly the same 'symptoms.' APC support was no help either.
Based on this, I can only conclude that the entire line of APC LE1200 do NOT function the way they are supposed to!
| | Smooth Power When Big Motors Start by James Newman (San Diego) 5 Stars July 21, 2009 My beautiful new LCD TV flickered or blacked out momentarily when the central air conditioning compressor started up. I never noticed a flicker with my old TV but that one had a smaller screen and used DLP technology. I purchased the APC LE1200 from Amazon and received it the next business day, as promised. I plugged it in ahead of my surge suppressor and now the A/C doesn't bother the LCD TV at all! This APC unit is much cheaper than equivalent Tripp-Lite units and it is way, way cheaper that the over-hyped Monster Cable units. I recommend it highly if you need transient power smoothing and surge suppression for sensitive equipment.
| | Does the job for a great price! by C. Cobb (Phoenix, AZ) 5 Stars July 19, 2009 Back story:
Due to very old power lines in my historic home near downtown Phoenix, AZ I discovered that my electronics were failing left and right. Over the last year I went through constant conversations (and battles) with electricians and the power company regarding home wiring VS utility lines. Finally we discovered that a very old transformer was the culprit. Just this week the utility company has replaced the transformer and the pole and everything should be good to go from this point forward. During this twelve month process, however, I needed to protect all of my electronics.
Enter the APC LE1200:
I read a lot on Amazon and Google before discovering this great little voltage regulator. As the other reviewers have mentioned the weight of the product was the first thing I noticed when I pulled the first one out of the box. These things are heavy - and that usually means quality in the world of voltage regulators. I wanted to protect the computers / office equipment in the two bedrooms of my house as well as the entertainment center in the living room so I purchased three of these units all together. Since I started using them they have switched on many, many times alerting me to the fact that I would have all most surely fried nearly every expensive electronic I own - which makes me very glad I chose to purchase these. I have not experienced any further issues with anything that has been plugged into these devices (which is more than I can say for the rest of the outlets in my house).
I am very happy and satisfied! Five stars all the way!!!
