I've had a pair of MDR7506's for 5 or 6 years and they still sound fantastic. Like all headphones, I recommend breaking them in ("burn in") before really using them - hook them up to an audio source and let a variety of music and other sounds play thru them at around half-volume overnight and they'll really sound much better.
Over the years, I've used them in a studio, used them with an iPod, and used them to DJ with in loud nightclubs, and they are still kicking. The leatherette covering on the ear cups has fallen apart, which makes the pads not quite as comfortable or as sound-isolating, but I plan on replacing the pads (just haven't gotten to it yet!).
I can say these are absolutely the best studio/DJ headphones for the money.

I have purchased between 6 and 8 pairs of these headphones over the last 15 years. I do professional audio with them and I am a little hard on them. In the past I have always been happy with their durability, buy the last two have a new issue. The cable covering on both of the last two has split, exposing bare wires. I never had this problem before and it seems that they changed the formula of the housing texture wise. I hope someone from sony will see this and look into the problem. As far as sound quality goes they are great for monitoring sound. I just hope sony fixes this issue before I move on to another brand.

I moved from an older model Sony headset to this one. I'd been using my older one for 15+ years and it's still ticking along nicely. However, I needed something with more dynamic range. This model was suggested independently by two friends, each fellow musicians. Their recommendations were spot-on. This set is amazing. Upon first-listen, my jaw was on the floor listening to the difference in my audio mixes. I'm sure this set will hold up nicely if it behaves like my previous Sony set. Get them. You will love the results.

Not much to say about these, they are great quality and very comfortably. I would highly recommend them for recording as well as use with programs such as Guitar Rig or Amplitube, which is why I purchased them. I wouldn't use these headphones for listening to mp3's outside the house, not just because they are expensive, but because the closed eared sound is probably not the best thing to have while in public, and personally if I'm not recording music, I prefer to have ear buds or non closed headphones.
Regardless of what you use them for, you shouldn't be disappointed with these.
